In season 5, The Expanse finally shows Luna, the human settlement on the moon, and as Amos arrives at the station, viewers catch a glimpse of a memorial to the Augustin Gamarra. Although a small moment, it’s a significant one because the ship represents both past and present conflicts in the world of The Expanse, especially in light of the actions of Marcos Inaros at the end of season 4.

For a long time, Naomi was very much in love with Inaros. At some point in their relationship, she was led to believe he wanted to sabotage the reactors of ships and then rescue them for profit. To do this, Naomi developed a hack to control reactors thinking Inaros was only committing acts of piracy.

However, Inaros had other plans. He used her code to overload the reactors of the Augustin Gamarra at a dock in Luna. In season 4, Naomi revealed to Lucia that the explosion killed 516 people. Full of guilt and disgust for Inaros’ actions, Naomi decided to never help him again. But Inaros tried to use their son, Filip, to blackmail her into staying with him. Feeling she had no other choice, Naomi left not just Inaros but also their son, hoping to start a new life away from his violent actions. Luckily, this led her to become part of the Rocinante's crew, where she found a new family.

The Expanse Season 5 Keon Alexander as Marcos Inaros

The memorial shown on Luna is a reminder of the weight Naomi carries around every day, and of Inaros’ past terrorist actions, which have always been violent even if made with Belters' prosperity and rights in mind. His hatred of Earth and Mars infected his relationship with Naomi and is now affecting how Filip sees his mother. Inaros’ willingness to deceive and use Naomi makes it clear he will always place his mission over his family. It explains Naomi’s deep concern for Filip's safety: she knows his father can and most likely will toss him aside if he gets in the way of his plans.

The Augustin Gamarra also shows that while the opening of the Ring gates has paused the conflict between Earth, Mars, and the Belt on The Expanse, the hatred and suspicion between these three factions is still very real and very present. While some Belters are content to work with Earth and Mars toward a common goal of colonization, others can't because they still harbor hatred towards the Inners. Inaros’ meteor attack was inevitable: a consequence of years of exploitation and conflict. The Ring was merely a reprieve and a distraction, used by Marcos Inaros to catch Earth by surprise.
