pave the way for The Wheel of Time season 4.
It speaks to the fact that Prime Video, outside of action shows like Reacher and superpowered stories like The Boys and Invincible, is struggling with some of the quieter genres that make up a more balanced television portfolio. That is exemplified in the streamer's latest cancellation, which comes as something of a surprise.
Étoile Is Done At Prime Video
The Show Debuted Not Long Ago
Étoile premiered in late April on Prime Video, hailing from Gilmore Girls creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino. Following world-class ballet companies, the cast of Étoile includes Luke Kirby, Charlotte Gainsbourg, Lou de Laâge, Gideon Glick, David Alvarez, Ivan du Pontavice, Taïs Vinolo, and Jonathan Groff, alongside Gilmore Girls alums Yanic Truesdale and Kelly Bishop. The eight-episode dramedy earned generally favorable reviews, with an Emmy campaign currently underway for the series.

Étoile Season 1 Ending Explained: What Happens To Nicholas & How It Sets Up Season 2
Etoile dives into the world of professional ballet, and season 1's surprise ending sets up an exciting season 2.
Deadline confirms that, despite receiving a two-season order, Étoile has been cancelled at Prime Video. Despite the order, which looked to bode well for the ballet saga, it is reported that there are contingencies in place to pull back on a multi-season order and to discuss the future of each series depending on its budget and overall viewership.
The streamer has leaned on this approach in the past with other dramas. In the case of the ballet dramedy, it reportedly came down to the fact that the show did not perform well enough compared to its costs. Despite the cancellation, however, Prime Video is still expected to the dramedy's Emmy campaign.
Our Take On Étoile's Cancellation
It's Another Setback
During an interview on Marc Maron's podcast, Sherman-Palladino discussed how it wasn't her decision to end her Emmy-winning series The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. Although she struck a positive note about how Maisel wrapped, she also joked that the comedy was ending so that Prime Video could pay for their other originals, including The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power. After the somewhat surprising end to Étoile, it will be interesting to see what the Palladinos will do next, now that the ballet ion project has wrapped.
