Since the release of the 5th edition and its appearance on Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves.
Most details about the movie have been kept under wraps so far, including the plot. However, there is just enough information to begin getting excited among Honor Among Thieves until the release of its trailer.
It's A Reboot
While the plot is likely to be original, Honor Among Thieves is not the first D&D movie to be made. The first Dungeons and Dragons film was made in 2000, followed by made-for-TV and direct-to-video sequels respectively.
It's unclear whether Honor Among Thieves will retain any story presented by the original trilogy, as it is considered part of the film series. The new movie at least has better hope for the box office, as the first Dungeons and Dragons films received horrible critical reception.
Its Stars
Though the game itself has been considered niche for a long time, Honor Among Thieves presents a well-known cast that has certainly helped with the film's popularity. One of its all-star is its lead, Chris Pine, who has expressed excitement over the movie himself.
The cast also includes some faces familiar from Netflix shows, like Sophia Lillis (I Am Not Okay With This) and Regé-Jean Page (Bridgerton). Other notable are Michelle Rodriguez (Fast & Furious franchise), Justice Smith (Pokémon: Detective Pikachu) and rom-com actor Hugh Grant (Love Actually, Notting Hill).
An Unusual Race
The game Dungeons and Dragons offers many playable races, including the most popular races in fantasy fiction: elves, dwarves, halflings, and of course, humans. It's been circulated, however, that Honor Among Thieves will feature one of the game's more unusual races: the Tabaxi.
The Tabaxi are anthropomorphic cat people introduced as a playable race in the D&D book Volo's Guide to Monsters. The credit list released for Honor Among Thieves includes a "Tabaxi mother," so fans of the feline-humanoids can expect to see the race's first appearance on screen.
A Tiefling In The Party
Tabaxi's aren't the only D&D-specific race to appear in Honor Among Thieves. Though it hasn't been formally released, leaked set photos show actress Sophia Lillis dressed as tiefling, another of the game's playable races.
In D&D, tieflings are humanoids with a mix of human and infernal bloodlines. In the photos, Lillils sports two horns, the most identifiable trait specific to tieflings. Though Lillis looks otherwise human, tiefling characters have also been known to have reddish or blueish skin and sometimes tails.
Its Writers And Directors
Honor Among Thieves features two directors, John Francis Daley and Johnathan Goldstein, who are also the screenwriters for the film. Daley and Goldstein have collaborated on many projects together, having both written for Game Night.
Honor Among Thieves is not the only Daley and Goldstein film. The two have both created the story for the new DC movie The Flash, which is still set to be released despite controversy from The Flash's actor Ezra Miller.
Film Locations
It has been released that the filming locations for Honor Among Thieves included both Iceland and Belfast, Northern Ireland. The shooting was said to be completed sometime in August 2021.
It's no surprise that this D&D movie chose these locations, as Europe has been the filming location for a number of fantasy movies and shows. For example, Game of Thrones was also largely filmed in Northern Ireland.
It Takes Place In The Forgotten Realms
Though the plot is still unknown, the setting of Honor Among Thieves is set to take place in The Forgotten Realms. This is the general fictional world where most of D&D lore takes place, and the setting of many adventure modules. Notable areas in The Forgotten Realms include Waterdeep, Icewind Dale and Baldur's Gate.
This isn't the first time The Forgotten Realms have branched out from the game. Though originally created by Ed Greenwood for his personal stories, The Forgotten Realms have expanded to being adapted into many forms of media, including books and video games.
It Will Be At Comic Con
Those impatient to know more about the movie will be happy to know that Honor Among Thieves is set to have an appearance at the San Diego Comic-Con of 2022. Fans will be able to immerse themselves in a one-of-a-kind D&D tavern experience and receive an exclusive poster.
Guests will have the opportunity to see the all-star cast of the film as well, as they will be giving a July 21st along with the filmmakers. This will be the first opportunity to see exclusive Honor Among Thieves content.
It Will Be Comedic
While the game of Dungeons and Dragons can have some serious, heavy themes that make the game so impacting, it can also be an opportunity to have fun with friends and joke around. The new movie is rumored to carry the same lighthearted feeling.
Honor Among Thieves is said to be similar to classic fantasy movies like Monty Python and the Holy Grail. While there will inevitably be some dramatic, serious fights, viewers can expect to laugh as well.
The Release Date
Dungeons and Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is set to come to theatres on March 3rd, 2023, and is being produced by Paramount Pictures. Originally, the film was set to release in 2021. However, due to struggles between rights and production companies, the release date is officially set for the year.
While it seems far away, more information is sure to be given to the public as the date gets closer and closer. Until then, D&D and fantasy fans should be on the lookout for any news.
