Max's epic prequel series more than 10,000 years before Paul Atreides' rise to power.

With the heady complex lore of the Dune franchise as its backdrop, Dune: Prophecy follows in the footsteps of other HBO hits like Game of Thrones. Considering the plethora of events that could be investigated by the series, there was no reason to think that Prophecy would be a one-and-done miniseries. Planting seeds (much like the Bene Gesserits themselves) throughout season 1's story, it's clear that designs were in place to turn Dune: Prophecy into the next great franchise epic. Season 2 could rival contemporaries like House of the Dragon and Rings of Power, albeit from the sci-fi genre instead.

Just a month or so after the sophomore season was renewed, the latest news comes in the form of a filming update for Dune: Prophecy season 2. Series star Olivia Williams was at 2025's Sundance Film Festival, and she revealed a few key details about Prophecy's shooting schedule to Screen Rant. "I think we are going to start in the fall, and I don’t know anything [about Valya’s story]. I know nothing, so I’m just as excited as you are." said Williams, suggesting that it will be a while before season 2 finally arrives.

If season 2 begins filming as late as fall 2025, that means it likely won't wrap until several months into 2026. That means that the earliest the show could come back would be the latter half of 2026, suggesting a nearly two-year wait for the sophomore episodes.

Dune: Prophecy premiered on November 17, 2024.

Season 2 is set to begin filming in fall 2025, which suggests a lengthy wait for new episodes to arrive.

Dune: Prophecy was a big gamble for HBO, and there was no guarantee that viewers would be interested in such a dense exploration of the history of Frank Herbert's universe. However, those doubts proved to be unfounded, and the series became a bona fide streaming hit. This prompted the series to score an early season 2 renewal just a few days before the season 1 finale. Season 2 is set to begin filming in fall 2025, which suggests a lengthy wait for new episodes to arrive.

Dune: Prophecy Season 2 Cast Details

Who Will Return In The Dune Prequel?

Predicting the cast of Dune: Prophecy season 2 was made easier by the ending of the debut season, and a continuing story requires more than a few cast to return. There are a few major cast that will likely return to reprise their roles, alongside a host of newcomers as well. Most important of all, it's expected that Emily Watson will be back as one half of the Harkonnen sisters, Valya, while Olivia Williams will return to play the other, Tula. Since they are the puppet masters of the early days of the Bene Gesserit, they will probably have more business in the sophomore outing.

It could also stick with the Harkonnen sisters as they continue their work, or perhaps open the door for more of the great houses to get involved as well.

Based on what's been said about the grand scope of Dune: Prophecy, it's clear that the development of the Bene Gesserit and the beginnings of their epic designs is only part of the prequel's larger story. This means the sophomore season has literally 10 millennia of history to incorporate if it wants to jump ahead. It could also stick with the Harkonnen sisters as they continue their work, or perhaps open the door for more of the great houses to get involved as well.

The ending of Dune: Prophecy season 1 established a slew of exciting conflicts in season 2, not the least of which is the now vacant Imperial throne. The death of Emperor Javicco Corrino is going to leave a massive power vacuum, and the Bene Gesserit are already trying to influence the outcome of the succession through Princess Ynez. Meanwhile, the biggest mystery of the series has only just begun to heat up as Desmond Hart's origins were revealed. One lingering question is who implanted Hart with the Thinking Machine, and the answer will likely lead to an Earth-shattering twist.
