The latest first look photos for Denis Villeneuve's it was his dream to re-adapt the book for the big screen in September 2016.
Jump ahead to about three and a half years and Villeneuve is now in post-production on Dune, which will only adapt the first half of Herbert's original book. Set in the far future, the movie stars Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, the heir to the powerful House Atreides, which has only just gained control of the desert planet Arrakis. A dangerously hot world populated by giant sandworms, Arrakis is also the only known source of a substance called melange or "spice" (a drug-like material with mind-altering abilities vital for navigating outer space), making the task of protecting it from other powerful houses all the more difficult.
Having only just unveiled Zendaya and Javier Bardem as Chani and Stilgar, both of whom are of Arrakis' native Fremen tribe who play key roles in the story. Check them out, below.

As newcomers to the Dune franchise have undoubtedly already picked up, Herbert's source material is Stephen King's IT. As Villeneuve told Vanity Fair, “I would not agree to make this adaptation of the book with one single movie. The world is too complex. It’s a world that takes its power in details.”
Visually, Dune already looks pretty stunning, between the cast and their stylishly grounded sci-fi costumes, the striking real-world backdrops of southern Jordan and Abu Dhabi where Villeneuve shot many of the scenes on Arrakis, and the sharp color palette of extremely difficult story to adapt for the big screen in the past - but judging by these initial glimpses, this might be the one to finally crack the code.
