An open-world Arrakis survival MMO titled Dune: Spice Wars RTS game, and now an open-world MMO will immerse players in the unforgiving deserts of Arrakis.
The Dune franchise tells the story of Paul Atreides, a young noble whose father becomes the ruler of a hostile planet called Arrakis. Also referred to as Dune, the planet is nearly inhospitable but is valued for the coveted spice that forms within its endless deserts. Frank Herbert himself wrote five sequels to Dune, and his son Brian Herbert has expanded the saga further with even further installments. Denis Villeneuve's 2021 film adaptation of the first book has sparked renewed interest in Dune, with the filmmaker set to release a follow-up film in the future. A Dune survival action game was recently teased by publisher Funcom, and now Dune: Awakening has been officially revealed.
An official announcement trailer for Dune: Awakening was posted to YouTube by Funcom following its reveal during Gamescom Opening Night Live 2022. Inspired by Frank Herbert’s sci-fi masterworks and Denis Villeneuve's movie adaptation, the open-world survival MMO will let players explore Arrakis with others. Dune: Awakening will combine the grittiness of survival games with the social interactivity of multiplayer games, letting players explore a massive shared world together. The game will see players rise from survivalist to ruler as they build shelter, harvest spice and protect their territory from other players.
Dune: Awakening Will Lets Players Fight For Control Of Arrakis
Given the themes present in Frank Herbert's original novel, a Dune strategy and survival video game seems like an obvious way to adapt the sci-fi saga. Dune: Awakening will include these elements, but the title will also create a massively multiplayer version of Arrakis that will fundamentally change the experience. The MMO element will likely add great depth to each player's journey, with s able to either forces to survive or compete for control of Arrakis' valuable spice. No gameplay has been shown, but Dune's infamous sandworms will no doubt make exploration exceptionally hazardous too.
Dune: Awakening promises to deliver a large and authentic version of Arrakis within which players can survive and thrive. The cinematic trailer unveiled at Gamescom doesn't feature any actual gameplay, but it does include a glimpse at the franchise's signature sandworms. The planet Arrakis is infamously hostile, and Dune: Awakening will let players rise up from a simple survivor to a professional spice harvester within this unforgiving environment.
Dune: Awakening will release for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC.
