Summary

  • Dune: Part Two will feature more of Zendaya's character, Chani, addressing a common critique of the first film's lack of screen time for the actress.
  • The sequel will have more battles, including a war for power over Arrakis between Paul Atreides' Fremen and the Harkonnens, promising an epic cinematic battle.
  • Dune: Part Two will expand the world of the Dune universe, introducing new worlds and cultures, including the Harkonnens' home planet and the emperor's world on Kaitain.

Dune: Part Two has the potential to be bigger and better than the first film, based on the book and details about the production. Directed by Denis Villeneuve, Dune is a sci-fi epic film based on the novel of the same name by Frank Herbert. The modern film adaptations split the novel in half, allowing for more time to be spent developing the story, rather than attempting to wrap the complex sci-fi narrative into one film. Following the critical acclaim and commercial success of part 1, a second film was green-lit to complete the story.

Dune: Part Two releases on March 15, 2024, and is set to continue the story of the novel, as Paul Atreides begins his mission to lead the Fremen against Arrakis' Harkonnen oppressors. There's a possibility that more Dune films could follow as adaptations of Frank Herbert's sequel novels. Warner Bros. has also taken to expanding the fictional world with a prequel series that is set to air on Max.

9 Dune 2 Will Feature More Of Zendaya's Chani

Though Dune was met with primarily acclaim from viewers, applauding its faithful adaptation of the novel, a common critique was the lack of Zendaya's character, Chani. Chani appears primarily in the Dune film through Paul Atreides' visions, and only fully appears at the end of the movie. This is consistent with her role in the novel, but fans of the actress were still disappointed in her lack of screen time. Luckily, the sequel film should have much more Chani, as she becomes a more prevalent character in the latter half of the book.

8 Dune 2 Will Have More Battles

Paul fights Feyd-Rautha in Dune 2.

The first Dune film had a few skirmishes and one large scale battle that sees House Atreides ambushed by House Harkonnen and the Sardaukar. There are many more battles to be had in Dune: Part Two, as a war for power over Arrakis between Paul Atreides' Fremen and the Harkonnens, breaks out. There will also be more personal duels between characters. An easy comparison to make is to the Lord of the Rings trilogy, which sees more scattered action in Fellowship of the Ring, then large scale war in the next two films. The war for Arrakis will certainly be an epic cinematic battle.

7 Dune 2 Will Demonstrate The Strength Of Desert Power

In Dune, Leto Atreides describes his interest in Arrakis to Paul while they're still on Caladan. He describes an untapped potential in "desert power," a term describing the great strength of the Fremen warriors. Dune hints at desert power at the end, when a Fremen warrior is shown riding one of the sandworms. Part 2 will see Paul carrying out his father's words and using the full strength of Arrakis.

6 Dune 2 Is Set To Be More Mature Than Part 1

Timothee Chalamet as Paul Atreides with blue eyes in Dune

Dune is a mature and complex novel with political and philosophical commentaries, much of which will have to remain in the film to properly conclude the story. While the story so far seems to be building up Paul Atreides as a mythical hero, that's not quite the meaning of the novel, and is something Part 2 will begin to diverge from. Paul is the protagonist, but he isn't a superhero; he's a man set on a path to rule, and his ascendance is accompanied by great acts of violence, something explored even further in Dune Messiah.

5 Dune 2 Will Introduce New Characters Played By Awesome Actors

Florence Pugh as Princess Irulan in Dune Part 2.

2021's Dune already had an incredible ensemble cast, but part 2 will be expanding it with even more great acting talent. Florence Pugh will play the role of Princess Irulan Corrino, the daughter of the Emperor, while Christopher Walken will play the Emperor himself, Shaddam Corrino IV. Austin Butler ed the cast as the antagonist Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, nephew of Baron Vladimir Harkonnen. Léa Seydoux will play the Bene Gesserit, Margot Fenring. Tim Blake Nelson has also been cast in Dune 2, and while his role is currently unknown, it seems likely that it'll be Count Hasimir Fenring.

4 Dune 2 Will Expand The World

While the 2021 Dune film gives a glimpse at Caladin, it primarily explores Arrakis. The second film will expand the world of the futuristic sci-fi universe, introducing new worlds and cultures. Part 2 will spend more time on Giedi Prime, the Harkonnen home planet. A Dune costume designer also spoke on seeing the emperor's world in Dune 2. The seat of Emperor Shaddam Corrino IV exists on a planet named Kaitain, which is never visited and only briefly mentioned in the books. Exploring it further would likely add to the stories of Shaddam and Princess Irulan.

3 Dune 2 Will Have A Better Climax

Austin Butler as Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen in Dune Part 2

A fair critique of 2021's Dune was that it wasn't a complete story on its own. Dune established the world, introduced characters, and reached the inciting incident of the fall of House Atreides, but there's no major climax to end the film. In all fairness, Dune isn't really a book that has a good half way intermission point, and the film did a great job with establishing enough drama and action to make the first part exciting. The second part will have no trouble adapting the action and emotional climaxes of the novel. They're two separate films, but they tell one complete story.

2 Dune 2 Will Likely Get A Massive IMAX Run

2023 has showcased the power of movies being handled as events, with Barbenheimer sparking one of the greatest movie crazes of the century so far. The popularity of the IMAX release format was a huge part of the success of Barbie and Oppenheimer, and films will be looking to maximize on it in the future. With limited capable theaters, studios will strategize their releases to get as many IMAX screenings as possible. The film's mid-March release date should give it a couple of weeks to dominate IMAX screens. Box office success for the film will hopefully lead to more Dune projects.

1 Dune 2 Pays Off All Of Part 1's Lengthy Setup

Dune is a story that requires tons of set up. It's a vast and detailed world, with tons of characters and complex political intrigue. The first film introduced the world and its mythology, ideas about a prophetic vision, romantic intrigue, as well as a tense political conflict between House Atreides and the Harkonnens. Dune: Part Two will pay off on all of these storylines, wrapping up the plot points, delivering exciting battles and climactic moments, and fulfilling everything the first film sets up.
