Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake brings back many of the class JRPG systems from the original game, including how you recruit characters to your party. Assembling a team of four characters defines how you play, as the combination of classes you recruit is vital to your group's success. You must hire the right people and carefully shuffle them around to craft the best party possible for challenging missions.

Party crafting is something you can customize multiple times throughout a playthrough. You can recruit characters from different classes in DQ3 Remake, then leave them behind if you want to pick up someone else later. Your roster can change greatly as you encounter new challenges, bosses, or story events that force you to adjust the make-up of your team.

How Recruiting Characters Works In Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake

Find The PALS For A Winning Team

You can recruit characters through the Premiere Adventurer Listing Services, or PALS found very early in your DQ3 Remake adventure. When you start in Aliahan, your Hero is led to the Patty's Party Planning Place building where PALS helps you assemble three other characters to add to your first party. However, the game doesn't shed too many details about how this process works.

Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake Review: A New Classic Of An Old Classic

Dragon Quest 3 HD-2D Remake successfully introduces a new generation to one of the best RPGs of all time, along with a host of improvements.

No other place revealed in DQ3 Remake's massive story has the PALS organization, so the Planning Place is the only location where you can recruit characters. Head up the stairs and go left to find the front desk of this place, then talk to the person behind the counter. From here, you have three options tied to the customization of your party, which include:

  • Pick Up A New Party Member
  • Drop Off An Old Party Member
  • Viewing Your Party Roster
  • Recruit More Allies

You can only have four characters in your party at a time, so you may need to drop off allies with PALS to pick them up again later. When you pick the "Recruit More Allies" option, you get to create a party member from scratch, choosing their class and appearance. This will be the first choice you'll have to make when visiting the Planning Place initially as you gain your first team .

As your party level up and grow, you can "store" them with PALS using the "Drop Off" option. You can immediately come back and add them to your party by choosing "Pick Up" from the PALS menu.

Recruiting a character starts with giving them a name, which can be anything you think of. Your next choice is arguably the most important - which Vocation class in DQ3 Remake does your new party member have? While you can't choose the Hero role of your protagonist, you can make one choice among these other nine classes in the game:

Class

Strengths

Weaknesses

Sage

  • Can learn all spells from the Mage and Priest classes
  • Powerful DPS with magic
  • Can fulfill both damage dealer or role
  • Must have come from Gadabout class
  • Words of Wisdom needed to change into this class
  • Lower health than other Vocations

Thief

  • Incredibly high speed compared to others
  • Can steal items from enemies
  • Very low damage output
  • Stolen items aren't always good

Warrior

  • Can use almost any type of melee weapon
  • High starting HP and Strength
  • Deal incredibly high damage
  • Unable to learn any magic
  • Less flexibility than other classes

Martial Artist

  • Above-average starting HP, Agility, and Strength
  • Can defend and attack in equal measure
  • Might be the most balanced class
  • Unable to learn any magic
  • No unique abilities for the class

Mage

  • Learns the most types of different spells
  • Deals extremely high damage with magic
  • Low HP, Agility, and Strength
  • Have to rely on MP resource
  • Few defensive qualities, glass cannon
