Dragon Ball Daima's new incarnation of Super Saiyan 4 has sparked many fan theories, trying to tie it in more closely to Dragon Ball Super. One such theory is that the form is somehow connected to Super Saiyan God, but does that theory have any merit to it?
Dragon Ball Daima's introduction of Super Saiyan 4 to the canon of the series caused a number of fans to wonder why it looked the way it did, and why it wasn't used after the discovery of Super Saiyan God in Super. Since Daima's Super Saiyan 4 gives Goku a reddish hair color, much like Super Saiyan God, people began to wonder if this redesigned version of the form was meant to connect to Super Saiyan God directly. Since Goku was being empowered by Neva, in much the same way he would be empowered by the Super Saiyan God ritual, it seemed like enough evidence to make some kind of connection.
Dragon Ball Daima's Super Saiyan 4 is Unconnected to Super Saiyan God
Daima's New Form Wasn't Created With an Explicit Connection to God
In an interview with X (formerly Twitter) @SofianLeGeek, Dragon Ball character designer Katsuyoshi Nakatsuru was asked about the color connection between Super Saiyan 4 and Super Saiyan God. As translated by X @Venixys, Nakatsuru answered by saying, "I didn't work on the design of Super Saiyan God in Dragon Ball Super, so I wouldn't know." This would seemingly confirm that the redesign of Super Saiyan 4 wasn't to make it more closely resemble Super Saiyan God, and that any connection between the two forms color-wise is just a coincidence.
It is always possible that Toriyama himself might have had a Super Saiyan 4 opinion that wasn't shared with Nakatsuru, but there's no way to be sure of that now. For the moment, at least, the evidence points to the fact that the creators behind Daima weren't intending to tie into Super Saiyan God at all. This definitely dashes some potentially interesting fan theories about how the two forms could connect, which is always a little disappointing, but ultimately it's better that fans know the truth of what was intended.
Later Series Could Always Retcon the (Lack of) Connection
Future Dragon Ball Content Could Redefine the Relationship Between Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan 4
However, just because there is no connection between the two forms as of now, doesn't mean that will necessarily be the case forever. It's always possible that a future installment of Dragon Ball, be it a second season of Daima or the return of Super or something else entirely, could retroactively tie the forms together. As of now, the legal issues which are plaguing Dragon Ball may be having an impact on the ability to connect Daima to Super, in which case the truth could only be revealed after the legal suits have been settled and ownership of the franchise determined. For now, at least, Dragon Ball Daima fans can reliably say Super Saiyan God and Super Saiyan 4 are unrelated.
