Goku’s lineage in Dragon Ball has evolved over the course of the franchise. Fans have become familiar with his first son, Gohan, and later Goten, along with his brother Raditz, his father, Bardock, and his mother, Gine. However, there may be more to Goku’s bloodline, and his heritage could be explored further.
The Saiyans have always been an interesting race, but despite haunting the narrative, they are never fully explored in depth in the series. Fans' knowledge is limited to the fact that they are a warrior species that thrives on strength and power. Their culture revolves around conquest, and their personalities are often described as brash, cold, and fiercely independent. Goku’s upbringing on Earth taught him the value of friendship and love, but most Saiyans on Planet Vegeta don't share the same sentiment.
Goku’s Family Tree May Be Larger Than Fans’ Thought
Akira Toriyama Shared His Thoughts Surrounding Bardock’s Family Tree
While Goku’s immediate family is well explored, there remains the possibility that he has a larger, undiscovered Saiyan lineage. His parents and siblings have all been confirmed, but beyond them, little else has been explored. However, in an interview Toriyama suggested that Goku may potentially have unknown cousins or even simply a larger extended family he never knew. Toriyama stated:
"The quartet of Bardock, Gine, Raditz, and Kakarot make up Bardock's family, such as it is, but all four of them were never together. Also, I think that Bardock himself might have had siblings, but perhaps even Bardock himself doesn't really know, and at any rate, he probably has no interest in it, either. Saiyans don't have much of a concept of 'family.'"
With Dragon Ball constantly expanding its lore, the existence of more Saiyan relatives is entirely plausible. Despite how little Saiyans value blood ties, there remains a possibility that Bardock had siblings. If so, Goku’s family tree could be much larger than fans are aware of. While Goku himself has never sought out his Saiyan heritage beyond direct confrontations, there is a chance the series could take that step for him in the future.
Saiyans Don’t Have the Same Concept of Family as We Know It
Bardock and Gine’s Relationship Was a Rare Exception Among Saiyans
Of every major race in Dragon Ball, Saiyans are the most detached from family values. Unlike humans who form deep emotional bonds with their relatives, Saiyans view relationships through a lens of survival and necessity. Of course, there were exceptions, including Goku’s parents, as “Bardock and Gine were those rare Saiyans who were ed by a bond.” Yet, despite this, similar to how Goku and Raditz overlooked their blood ties, Bardock likely wouldn’t have acknowledged any potential siblings he may have had.
To Saiyans, family has no significant meaning or weight, and any relationship is a means of reproduction rather than connection. While Bardock was one of the few Saiyans who showed any concern for his offspring, there is very little chance the sentiment extended past his immediate family if he had any. However, with Dragon Ball’s tendency to introduce unforeseen plot twists and additions to the lore, there stands a possibility that the series may explore more of Goku’s family tree.
