The that have been released so far, the player character is surrounded by companions, and the variety of interactions available to have with each companion is vast.

While every person is going to have their favorite companions that they always keep in their party, there are some that are more well-loved than others. Personal preferences will obviously vary, but there are clearly some main characters in the franchise that are more popular and more developed than others.

Cullen

The Inquisitor romances and shares a moment with Cullen on the Skyhold balcony at the end of the game in Dragon Age: Inquisition

While Cullen is one of the few characters who shows up multiple times throughout the franchise, he isn't well-loved amongst fans.

He comes across as a more stereotypical male hero than many of the more nuanced characters, and when romancing him in Dragon Age: Inquisition, the storyline is a bit lackluster. Plus, he's also a templar which many fans aren't a fan of.  He's rather serious and straight-laced, and while players do get a happy ending if they romance him, he's just a bit plain.

Solas

Solas talking in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Each Dragon Age game has a male elf companion, and while the two before Solas were received quite well, Solas isn’t very likable. His personality can be abrasive and grating, and the way he treats his relationship with the Inquisitor didn’t win him a lot of fans.

Also, since he is a romanceable companion, the fact that his ending will leave the Inquisitor rather alone made fans dislike him.

Anders

anders from dragon age 2

Ander is somewhat of a divisive character because there are definitely fans who love him and ship him with Hawke. However, he’s also a companion that betrays Hawke and really messed things up.

While blowing up the Chantry might have had some merits, Anders is also not trustworthy. In a relationship with Anders, he’s easily jealous and kind of whiny. And, it's hard to get over that he wrote his own manifesto.

Fenris

fenris from dragon age 2

Fenris is well-loved in one sense because he’s a brooding, attractive elf, and this is the kind of character many people adore. However, his bigotry toward mages made him less likable.

He is extremely moody and sometimes borders on violence. While fans could sympathize with him and want to help him evolve, he isn’t always exactly likable. However, he's still fun for gamers who like brooding elf men.

Sera

Sera at the woods in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Sera is a unique character in that she’s the only character so far in any of the games who is a lesbian, and while the franchise has a lot of LGBTQ+ characters, they mostly have straight or bisexual ones.

However, the fact is that Sera can just be a bit annoying. Her personality can seem immature at times, and she also has a self-hatred of elves even though she is one, which doesn't endear her to players.

Isabela

isabela from dragon age

Isabela is a very fun character that is easy to interact with in Dragon Age II. She is quick-witted, flirty, and intelligent, and her pirate background makes her rather interesting to learn about. However, it’s hard to like her completely given the betrayal storyline that she has.

Luckily, she is somewhat easy to forgive because she is so charming, but she’s not someone that you can exactly trust for most of the game.

Vivienne

Vivienne poses against a fiery backdrop in Dragon Age: Inquisition

Vivienne is one of the most intelligent and elegant characters in all of the games, and she does have a fascinating background as an advisor to Empress Celene.

The one downside with Vivienne is that she’s not a romanceable character, and fans tend to have the strongest emotions for characters that they can have their player fall in love with.

Iron Bull

iron Bull as he appeared in Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Iron Bull is the only Qunari companion in the games so far, and so he definitely stands out because of this. Fans really enjoyed him because of the rather hilarious lines he often delivers and because he is one of the more fun companions from Dragon Age: Inquisition to romance.

Plus, unlike many of the romanceable men in the series, he doesn’t betray the player or ruin the plot.

Morrigan

morrigan from dragon age

While Morrigan might not exactly be likable because she doesn’t have the most welcoming personality, fans really love her anyway.

She’s not exactly the most heroic of companions either as she’s mostly out for herself and her own self-interests, but she’s still an example of how some companions that are more abrasive or mean can still be completely charming. She's also a character that appears and is mentioned throughout the series.

Dorian

Dorian is smart, witty, and easy to talk to which makes him a favorite for many fans. Dorian is also the only gay man in the story, making him an important and representative character.

He has just enough of a complex backstory to have players of the game interested in learning more about him, but he doesn't end up turning on the player the way Anders or Solas do. He’s overall a loyal person once you get to know him, and he's one of the best players to romance.
