thanks to the infinite potential of mods. Serving as a fantastic appetizer for Xbox's June Showcase, the trailer for The Dark Ages includes a standout moment that sees The Doom Slayer equip a "Saw Shield" that's revved up and used to eviscerate a small army of demons. The weapon itself is impressive, allowing for quick charges, ranged kills, and damage blocking, so it makes sense that fans would want to try it early.
Posted to X (formerly Twitter) by modder CreeperOfSteam (per PC Gamer), the creator managed to create an incredible take on the Saw Shield that fits right into the original DOOM.
The mod for the classic 1993 shooter sees players don the item and use it to take down a plethora of undead soldiers and Imps. The functionality of the add-on is genuinely impressive as it allows Doom Guy to stop incoming fire, dish out a vicious melee attack on close-range foes, and even toss it like Captain America before picking it up off the ground.

DOOM: The Dark Ages - Release Window, Story, Setting, & New Gameplay
Here's everything to know about the DOOM game DOOM: The Dark Ages, which takes the familiar hero of the Doom Slayer to a new context.
A Shield Is New Ground For DOOM
The Best Defense Is A Good Offence
The introduction of the Shield Saw in DOOM: The Dark Ages took many fans by surprise given that the idea of hiding away from enemies doesn't necessarily fit the philosophy of the franchise. id Software's shooter has always encouraged players to get aggressive and run into the fray rather than taking cover and avoid fire. Granting the Doom Slayer a shield that's able to both block damage but also rip and tear through demons seems like a flash of genius.
The developer has yet to offer much in of concrete information on the Shield Saw but it stands to reason that The Dark Ages will incorporate an upgrade mechanic like the previous two games in the rebooted franchise. It's not impossible to see players improving the weapon's range, power, speed, and blocking capabilities. Having the Shield Saw equipped with a lock-on or homing function could be a fantastic way to engage a group of demons.
DOOM: The Dark Ages' Shield Saw is undoubtedly the best weapon shown off in the latest trailer but the footage also highlighted several other interesting tools of mayhem. The most unique is a scattergun that seemingly fires shards of a skull that's grinded down into dust within its chamber. The iconic Double-Barrelled Shotgun also makes a return because it's not Doom without the signature firearm.
