Renowned developer id Software is potentially working on a new entry in a "long-running iconic action FPS" franchise, according to some recent job listings. The DOOM 64 and Quake Ranger skins soon to be added as cosmetics.
id Software is best known for its three modern shooter franchises: dropping on PS5 and Xbox Series consoles.
As Video Games Chronicle reports, one of these franchises might be getting another installment. id Software recently sent out a few job listings for a Skybox Artist, Senior Technical Animator, and Environment Concept Artist, along with some other technical positions. The listings state that the positions are for work on a "long-running iconic action FPS" and that applicants are expected to be "Well versed in Fantasy and Sci-Fi art styles." The post does not explicitly state which franchise applicants would be working on.
The information provided by the posting does little to narrow down exactly what game might be in development, as a science-fiction art style and action FPS gameplay can apply equally to Rage, DOOM, or Quake. Rage's 2019 installment saw middling reviews and is arguably not "iconic," so it's unlikely that id Software is anxious to jump back into that franchise so soon. A new Quake game was rumored to be in development earlier this year, which gives credence to the theory that that is the "long-running iconic action FPS" that the studio is hiring for. On the other hand, Doom Eternal is still receiving new updates, so id Software could be looking to expand that game with DLC rather than start work on a brand-new installment.
With Microsoft's recent purchase of Bethesda, a new game from id Software could add to Xbox's growing roster of exclusive titles. This is a studio that has gained a great deal of respect in recent years owing to its fast-paced gameplay mechanics and memorable art styles, so any of its games would be welcome additions to the Xbox catalog. For now though, fans will just have to wait and see what id Software has up its sleeve.
