Bethesda has revealed that the highly-praised sequel to the 2016 reboot of the series, while The Elder Scrolls Online is an MMO based on the popular RPG franchise that takes place in locations such as Skyrim and Morrowind.

A raft of other publishers and developers have already announced that their own titles will be coming to next-gen consoles in enhanced forms. Most recently, systems such as Xbox Smart Delivery.

Publisher Bethesda released a statement earlier today announcing that both DOOM Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online would be ported to next-gen consoles. The move will make both titles available on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X. While the company has not confirmed when the games will launch for the consoles, it did reveal that those who already own them on current hardware can the enhanced versions free of charge. Developers are also hard at work on ensuring both titles are backwards compatible at launch according to Bethesda. The statement explained that more information would arrive during QuakeCon 2020. It also had this to say on other potential titles coming to next-gen platforms:

"While we don’t have any news to share just yet on our remaining catalogue of titles, we can confirm we are committed to offer free upgrades for current generation console owners of existing Bethesda titles we bring forward into the next generation of consoles."

This year's QuakeCon will take place online. Bethesda has moved away from a physical event to a digital one following the COVID-19 pandemic and its effect on gaming conventions. QuakeCon at Home will be live-streamed via Twitch, giving fans around the world to watch as the company reveals plans for its future. Starting on August 7, the event is expected to see Bethesda and its partners announce new titles as well as detailing more games that could be coming to the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X.

The announcement from Bethesda about DOOM Eternal and The Elder Scrolls Online is more good news for players who are thinking about upgrading to next-gen hardware. As more games become available to play on the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X, the consoles become a much more attractive option. Especially when you don't have to pay anything extra to get access to improved versions. Hopefully, this will prompt more publishers to detail their own plans for re-releasing older games on the platforms.
