Jennifer Lawrence, recipient of the 2013 best actress Oscar for her role in Silver Linings Playbook, has been injured on the set of Adam McKay’s Netflix film, cast is stacked with award-winning and acclaimed stars.
Lawrence rose to fame with her portrayal of Katniss Everdeen in the big screen adaptations of author Suzanne Collins’ hit YA series The Hunger Games, before going on to gain critical praise for a variety of dramatic roles. Don’t Look Up marks her first comedic film since Silver Linings Playbook, and given how well that turned out for her, fans are understandably looking forward to this latest effort. The film’s cast is arguably the most promising one assembled for a film set to be released this year, and includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Timothée Chalamet, Chris Evans, Cate Blanchett, Meryl Streep, Jonah Hill, Matthew Perry, Ariana Grande, Tyler Perry and Kid Cudi. It tells the story of two low level astronomers who must embark on a media tour to warn the global population that a comet will soon destroy earth.
Unfortunately, despite the anticipation that many might feel over the arrival of Don’t Look Up, Lawrence and the production have suffered a dangerous setback. While filming a scene involving a special effects explosion, Lawrence was reportedly struck in or near her eye with flying debris. The news comes courtesy of The Boston Globe, and reveals that Lawrence was rushed to hospital after the incident. News from the production is that the 30-year-old actress is okay and filming may resume next week.
Though at present the exact specifics of the incident aren’t completely clear, what is known is that the explosion caused a garbage can lid to smash through a window, and the resulting debris that flew through the air struck Lawrence before she could clear the area. It certainly sounds like a serious incident and it does beg the question as to why such a high profile actress was left remotely close to an explosion. Whether this was due to the strength of the blast being underestimated by the film’s pyrotechnic technicians or that Lawrence was simply not quick enough in getting out of the way is currently unclear. For now, however, the most important thing is ensuring that no permanent injury was caused as result.
Injuries on film set aren’t uncommon for actors, and there’s ample evidence of some very big productions temporarily losing stars due to injury when stunts gone wrong. In the case of Don’t Look Up, however, it does seem somewhat out of place for a comedy to put its stars at risk of injury as the result of an explosion. Hopefully, Lawrence won’t face any permanent damage from this unexpected accident and has a speedy recovery.
