The "Swamp Princess" does it again; Florida rapper-singer Doechii, who has already taken the rap world by storm with the release of last year's surging mixtape Alligator Bites Never Heal, has recently seen her Billboard Hot 100 chart fortunes take a significant leap. This is all thanks to a feature on another rapper's song, the social media app TikTok, and a clip from the classic television series The Fresh Prince of Bel Air.

In 2019, Doechii released a song called "Anxiety" that was only available for listening on the website YouTube. In 2023, Brooklyn rapper Sleepy Hallow sampled the hook from Doechii's song for use in his own track, also called "A N X I E T Y." s of TikTok recently started using Sleepy Hallow's song in videos synced to a classic dance done by Will Smith and Tatyana Ali's Fresh Prince characters in a scene from the show. As a result, this created an increase of interest in the "Anxiety" that Doechii had created and developed into a rare situation.

Doechii's Anxiety Just Charted At The Same Time As The Song Sampling It

A Billboard Double Feature

The added attention around "Anxiety" led Doechii to finally widely release the song (which samples the Kimbra-featuring track, Gotye's "Somebody That I Used To Know") digitally on March 4th. By the time "Anxiety" hit the charts (with help from a clip of Doechii recreating the Fresh Prince dance with Ali and Smith), it blasted up into the 13th spot, with over 20 million streams in the United States.

Meanwhile, Sleepy Hallow's Doechii-featuring "A N X I E T Y" has fallen a bit from its 45th entry position, but is still at 59th after last week with 8.7 million streams. While it is certainly an uncommon occurrence to see a rap song on the Billboard Hot 100 chart along with the song that track sampled, it isn't an unheard-of event. In fact, two rappers who drew the eye of pop culture with their storied 2024 song beef have also achieved this milestone.

Both Drake & Kendrick Lamar Brought Tracks They Sampled Into The Chart

And Just Three Years Apart

Back in 2021, Drake's song "Way 2 Sexy," which featured fellow rappers Future and Young Thug and was the first single from Drake's sixth studio album, Certified Lover Boy, debuted at number one on the Billboard Hot 100 upon release. The track sampled Right Said Fred's 1991 hit "I'm Too Sexy," which inspired a 2021 return to the charts for the band at number 74.

Some Kendrick Lamar fans may not realize that his legendary 2024 beef with Canadian rapper Drake began in 2013 with another surprise guest feature.

Similarly, rapper Future and producer Metro Boomin's song "Like That" (featuring fellow rapper Kendrick Lamar) also hit the Billboard Hot 100 number one slot after the release of the album We Don't Trust You in 2024, largely due to Lamar's guest verse that seemed to ignite the beginnings of last year's rap beef with Drake. "Like That" sampled the 1986 Rodney-O and Joe Cooley song "Everlasting Bass," which led to the track recharting at number 85 later that same year - similar to Doechii's own achievement.
