Ncuti Gatwa has been named as the new Doctor Who, and with the announcement of the 14th iteration of the famous Time Lord, fans of the hit BBC show are once again speculating as to which defining period of history, or indeed future, the Doctor might visit next.

By its very space and time-bending nature, Doctor Who has always wedded itself to the idea of a crossover hit with multiple television shows, and s on Reddit have long propositioned ideas for crossovers ranging from the sensible to the fanciful. The crossover suggestions on Reddit would be the stuff of dreams in writing rooms at BBC headquarters.

Spider-Man

The MCU is no stranger to crossover hits and Spider-Man: No Way Home's recent showing at the box office is a testament to the allure of cinematic string theory. Spider-Man is not the only character from the MCU that the Time Lord could theoretically forge an allegiance with but a crossover has long been mooted by industry executives and fans alike.

Writer Dan Slott has already penned a crossover comic involving the pair, and Reddit IamMothManAMA has had their say on what would be a historic link-up between two of the most beloved characters in entertainment, saying the collaboration "isn't surprising at all. There was so many Doctor Who references in Spidey comics 10-12 years ago."

BoJack Horseman

Bojack Horseman crossover with Doctor Who would have had endless potential, but sadly for BoJack and the Doctor, a crossover episode looks unlikely as the popular cartoon series has run its course.

The crossover potential between the two shows has not been lost on the Reddit community and TheMusicMatt has suggested that BoJack might bring out more of the Doctor's misanthropic character traits if they were to ever meet, saying "I can just imagine BoJack and the Doctor getting in an argument over who has had the worst life."

Star Trek

Flying through space and time and meeting friends and foes from galaxies far away are the thematic staples of both Doctor Who and Both of these sci-fi television shows are phenomenons in their own right and out of all the suggestions made by fans on Reddit, a crossover between the two does not seem like such a farfetched proposition.

Indeed, both the Borgs and the Daleks would slot seamlessly into the alternate universes of both shows, and the two worlds have long been mooted to merge as far back as Star Trek: Enterprise, with Reddit  dukecityvigillante saying that they had recently observed that Enterprise "is pretty much a Doctor Who spinoff." The comparisons stretch far and wide, which would be a crossover that would undoubtedly send fan theories into overdrive.

The X-Files

As with Star Trek, the universes of Doctor Who and The X-Files are incredibly complementary. Similar to the dynamic shared between FBI detectives Mulder and Scully in The X-Files, the eponymous Doctor in Doctor Who is usually accompanied on their quests by a companion; whilst investigating extraterrestrial mysteries is the modus operandi of both sets of characters.

Reddit hanSoes thinks there is a lot of comic potential in a crossover between The X-Files and Doctor Who, hypothesizing a troubled relationship between the two sets of characters. They suggest that "Scully would be looking disinterested the whole time while giving explanations of why the Tardis/Doctor/etc was fake/a non-extraterrestrial phenomena."

Community

With its emphasis on meta-comedy and a habit of referencing other hit shows, Russell T. Davies at the helm.

Indeed, any of Community's cast of characters could make a great accomplice to the Doctor, especially Troy and Abed. As Reddit Gibzee comments "Troy and Abed would have the time of their lives" in a Doctor Who crossover. This suggestion may have been a left-field choice but it makes sense peculiarly.

Blake's 7

A crossover between Doctor Who and the cult British television show Blake's 7 is a nostalgic marriage made in heaven. Blake's 7 was an operatic and dystopian television masterpiece that borrowed heavily in style from its BBC counterpart. Both shows' approach to markedly stylized depictions of space travel won over the hearts and minds of an adoring fan base.

Unlike Doctor Who, Blake's 7 only ran for four seasons and ended in 1981, so a future crossover isn't a realistic proposition, but Reddit ProfOfTheSnarkArts suggests that the two worlds are inseparable in design, saying "I like to consider Doctor Who as part of the same universe as Blake's 7." If time-travel were possible, this crossover would be high on the list of past amendments to television.

Ted Lasso

A potential crossover between Doctor Who and Ted Lasso is perhaps the strangest suggestion propositioned by Reddit s. Apart from both protagonists operating predominantly in the United Kingdom, the Time Lord tends to have a bit too much on their plate to follow the fortunes of soccer team Richmond F.C. Although, perhaps the Doctor could provide a decent team talk?

This has not stopped those on Reddit from dreaming of a crossover between the shows, and Ted Lasso's loveable charm and charisma make him a perfect candidate for the Doctor's accomplice. Reddit StevelKanevel hammers home the point by saying "how fun would it be if Ted got picked up by the Doctor as a companion for an episode or a special?"

Sherlock

Arthur Conan Doyle's famous detective found the perfect contemporary casting in Benedict Cumberbatch and the world created by Steven Moffat and Mark Gattis would undoubtedly be an ideal environment for a crossover with Doctor Who. Both television shows are staples of the BBC dramatic canon and a merging of the two would be a timeless fit for a special episode or even series.

David Tennant could happily switch roles to play Sherlock Holmes and many of Conan-Doyle's hero's character traits can be seen in the Time Lord. A Doctor Who and Sherlock crossover is one of the most popular suggestions on Reddit and if anyone at the BBC was looking for a name for the show, they need not look further than The_Endernaut's suggestion: "WHOLOCK".

Buffy The Vampire Slayer

Doctor Who has written into its stories its fair share of aliens and monsters and its titular hero has even encountered vampires during Matt Smith's tenancy as the Time Lord. Needless to say, there is no better slayer of vampires in the fictional world than Buffy, and a vampire crossover episode with Doctor Who would be a horror-tinged throwback for the ages.

Both shows deal in dark and comic tones and Buffy the Vampire Slayer's cast of characters would complement the Doctor in any given scenario. One Reddit suggests that Spike would make a perfect companion for Christopher Ecclestone's ninth doctor, saying "can you imagine the banter between Spike and the ninth doctor? It would be insanely good."

Once Upon A Time

Snow White crowns Regina as the Good Queen in Once Upon a Time.

Fantasy-adventure series Once Upon A Time dealt with all manner of fantastical elements during its seven seasons on television. By its very nature, the show borrowed storylines and tropes from well-worn and popular fairytale narratives. Doctor Who is also no stranger to leaping into the world of fairytales and a crossover between the two shows would have made sense.

Reddit spydalek fancies a wholesome meeting of franchises, suggesting "there's something about the idea of the Doctor and Gold having a chat," and they go on to suggest that Christopher Ecclestone's ninth doctor would be just the Time Lord for the job, saying "I suppose (the) ninth (doctor) would be an interesting contrast."
