As Ruby Sunday prepares to return to Doctor Who season 14, Ruby left the TARDIS to get to know her birth mother, choosing to reside on Earth with her family.
While opening up to ScreenRant about her return to Doctor Who in season 15's "Lucky Day," Gibson teased how an individual in her life has introduced a new dynamic to her character. Ruby's new boyfriend, Conrad, who is played by The Little Mermaid's Jonah Hauer-King, helps form a dynamic similar to Karen Gillan's Amy Pond and Arthur Darvill's Rory, with the newcomer trying to live up to the Doctor's example and providing her with someone who understands her as she deals with returning to an ordinary life on Earth. Check out Gibson's full response below:
I can tell you that Conrad is a very interesting character, and I think the fans are going to see an Amy and Rory vibe to them. They're going to think it's kind of that vibe going on.
Conrad really sees a lot of himself in the Doctor, and he kind of wants to be Ruby's Doctor because she eventually lets her walls down for him and opens up to him. She feels really seen by him for the first time because I think a lot of her friends don't really listen to anything she's been through. I mean, I wouldn't if my friend went, "Gosh, you'll never believe what's been happening to me for the past few months!"
I think having someone like Conrad come into her life, bond with her, and just really hear her out has been a really nice change for Ruby. It's been a distraction because she's been kind of waiting for the doctor still. She misses her buddy. So, it was nice for Conrad to be there for her.
What This Means For Doctor Who Season 15
Conrad May Be A Complicated Figure In The Whoniverse
With the character being played by the star of one of Disney's most recent live-action remakes, there is plenty of speculation about how Conrad will play into Doctor Who season 15. With Gatwa's era acting as an accessible entry point for newcomers to the series, Ruby's adventure will give those less-versed in the franchise new insight into how a companion may go on long after they leave the TARDIS. However, certain set photos and promotional materials have teased that Conrad may not be the positive influence that Ruby perceives him to be.

Why Ruby Sunday Left The TARDIS In Doctor Who Season 14's Ending
The reason Doctor Who's Ruby Sunday stayed on Earth at the end of season 14 instead of continuing to go on new adventures with the Doctor.
One element to be covered in Doctor Who episodes is the public perception of UNIT, as protests have begun to mount against the Earth-protecting organization in the wake of recent incidents. Furthermore, preview clips have shown Conrad as a podcaster on all things alien, as well as posters hinting at him becoming a public figure, leading up to the highly speculated and ominous May 25th date. As such, Conrad may be a complex figure that forces Ruby to question her relationship with her friend from Gallifrey.
Our Take On Ruby's Doctor Who Season 15 Storyline
Ruby's Role May Be Key To The Season's Largest Mystery
Regardless of whether Conrad ultimately turns out to be a friend or foe, it is clear that his bond with Ruby will be an important part of her arc in Doctor Who season 15. With the Doctor and Belinda unable to return to present-day Earth, it is left to Ruby and UNIT to hold the line against any threats to the planet, be they from the stars or within. However, her bond with Conrad may test whether a healthy balance between both sides of her life is truly possible.
