The article contains spoilers for Doctor Who season 14, episode 3, "Boom."
Summary
- Steven Moffat discusses Varada Sethu's surprise appearance in Doctor Who season 14.
- Sethu's character Mundy brings a unique and complex dynamic to the Doctor, showcasing a tough yet respected ally.
- With Sethu potentially playing a new character in season 15, the show continues the tradition of actors transitioning from minor roles to major ones.
With Sethu's surprise season 14 debut, Moffat opened up to TV Insider about her future. While Moffat was unsure of the exact details Russell T Davies had planned, he praised her chemistry and the complex dynamic Mundy brought to the Doctor. Check out his explanation below:
“[Showrunner] Russell [T Davies] has a plan, and I don’t know what the exact details of his release of that plan are going to be, I simply wrote the character of Mundy, and she did what she had to do in the story. It was quite important that she be a formidable and kindly person. She’s very, very tough and she’s notionally the Doctor’s enemy, but in the end, she wins the Doctor’s respect because she stands by what she believes in—and she shoots him three times in the arm, which is never very friendly, but she wins his respect.
I’m always cautious when you’re doing things like—the Doctor is quite intemperate when it comes to soldiers, and he’s quite intemperate when it comes to religion, but he has a grudging respect for both. He’s a scientist adventurer. Of course, he does have those slight disdains, but he frequently discovers there’s more to those people than he initially assumes, and there’s more to Mundy than he initially assumes. She’s tougher and stronger. He doesn’t always enjoy that, but you can’t really enjoy someone’s obstinacy when you’re standing on a landmine.”
Who Is Varada Sethu Playing In Doctor Who Season 15?
Will Sethu Continue To Play Mundy Or Someone Else?
With a potentially all-new character played by Sethu ing the TARDIS regularly, her season 15 reintroduction may provide a fresh new dynamic with Gatwa and Gibson unlike anything seen in "Boom."
With Moffat's comments on the Doctor Who season 14 casting, Sethu may play an entirely new character in season 15. This scenario is not as similar to how Donna Noble (Catherine Tate) and Clara Oswald (Jenna Coleman) made surprise debuts before officially ing the TARDIS as full-time companions. Instead, Sethu s a surprising club of Doctor Who actors who had minor roles in the series before taking major roles, including Peter Capaldi, Colin Baker, Freema Agyeman, and Karen Gillan.

Doctor Who season 14, episode 3, "Boom," is Steven Moffat's first contribution to the show since 2017, and the story contains many of his hallmarks.
From on-location filming before her official casting announcement, Sethu was seen alongside Gatwa in a recreation of a retro-styled American theater, donning a brightly colored dress alongside Gatwa in his sixties outfit from "The Devil's Chord." This led to many eagle-eyed viewers guessing that she may be a companion not from modern times. Regardless of where she may be from, Sethu's companion will not replace Gibson and will instead become the team's third member.
Though Moffat can't offer much insight into Suthu's season 15 role, it is clear her presence left an impression on the showrunner. While Mundy may not return alongside the Fifteenth Doctor, Sethu's chemistry with Gatwa and Gibson was captivating on-screen. With a potentially all-new character played by Sethu ing the TARDIS regularly, her Doctor Who season 15 reintroduction may provide a fresh new dynamic with Gatwa and Gibson unlike anything seen in "Boom."
Doctor Who season 14 releases every Friday simultaneously across Disney+ for international audiences and BBC iPlayer for UK viewers.
