Following the release of Doctor Who season 15, episode 1, is an intriguing watch that leaves behind a lot of mysteries, but this is the one that the Doctor himself is the most curious about.

After Belinda is kidnapped and brought to her planet, MissBelindaChandra, she discovers the robot overlord Al also has her Star Certificate, but a version from the future. But how? Hopefully, Doctor Who season 15’s ending will reveal exactly how this happens, but until then, let’s take a look at some fascinating theories.

5 The Doctor Gives The Robots The Certificate To Start Belinda's Journey

What If The Doctor Causes Belinda's Story In The First Place?

Of course, an obvious and simple explanation as to how the robots get the Star Certificate is that the Doctor gives it to them. Belinda is different from past Doctor Who companions, and it’s still unclear why the Doctor takes such an interest in her, other than the fact that somebody told the Time Lord about her, as established in “The Robot Revolution.” The Doctor has ensured time loop situations are resolved and closed before, such as in “Blink,” for example.

For events to happen in one person’s future and the other’s past, both parties need to be in the right places at the right time so that the timeline stays intact. So, if the robots never get a hold of Belinda’s Star Certificate in the future, the events of “The Robot Revolution” would be very different, or possibly cease to exist altogether. That also means that the Doctor never meets Sasha 55, nor would he be in the hospital looking for Belinda in the first place.

While it’s a rather simple solution to this issue, there’s a good chance the Doctor is behind this, but he doesn’t know it yet. Perhaps, once the Doctor solves the Belinda/Mundy mystery and all answers are provided to viewers, the Time Lord will locate the Robots in the relevant time and give the Star Certificate to them. However, we then have to consider why it’s the Doctor, and not Belinda herself.

I fear that Belinda’s story may not have a happy ending, but in order for her existence in the world of Doctor Who to occur in the first place, the Doctor has to make sure the chain of events actually happens. Perhaps Belinda dies saving the universe, and the Doctor is forced to face a bittersweet moment that sadly sets up her death, but keeps the endless number of beings across the galaxy alive.

4 The Master Is Responsible For Bringing The Doctor & Belinda Together

Is The Reference To The Time Lord In "The Giggle" Finally Paying Off?

The Toymaker’s gold tooth teases the Master’s return in the 60th anniversary special “The Giggle,” and so Doctor Who audiences know it won’t be long until the villainous Time Lord comes back. Considering the vague reference to the Saxon Master’s story arc in “The Robot Revolution,” specifically the drum-like sound when Belinda listens to the Doctor’s double heartbeat, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Master is involved.

It wouldn’t be the first time that the Master interfered with a companion’s timeline and pushed them toward meeting the Doctor in the first place

It wouldn’t be the first time that the Master interfered with a companion’s timeline and pushed them toward meeting the Doctor in the first place. The many versions of Clara Oswald in Doctor Who cross paths with several incarnations of the Doctor. However, their initial meeting, which eventually results in Clara entering his timestream and being split into a number of versions across time and space, is because of Missy. Missy gives Clara the TARDIS telephone number and tricks the companion into thinking it’s a Wi-Fi helpline.

But what if this is the same situation again, but reversed? Perhaps the Doctor has faced the Master again, but doesn’t realize it is them for some reason. The Master is always hypnotic, and seeing as a strange red-nailed figure picks the tooth up after the Toymaker’s defeat, it wouldn’t be impossible for them to hide in plain sight—at least for a little while.

There’s a chance that in a future season 15 episode, the Master is finally revealed, and he takes Belinda’s Star Certificate, makes a quick escape, and takes it to the Robots in order to lure the Doctor to them in the first place. Maybe it isn’t this complicated, and perhaps the Master is simply being chaotic for fun instead. Doctor Who is always timey-wimey, and it’s near impossible to predict the Master’s next unhinged move, but stranger things have happened in the show.

3 Everything Is Part Of Mrs. Flood's Secret Plan

Why Is Ruby Sunday's Neighbor Also Belinda Chandra's?

The enigmatic Mrs. Flood continues to confuse and bewilder Doctor Who audiences. One of the strangest moments in “The Robot Revolution” is when Belinda is being taken by the robots, and Mrs. Flood (appearing to be a neighbor) appears outside as she is being marched off the planet. But isn’t Mrs. Flood Ruby Sunday’s neighbor? There are several Doctor Who details that may reveal Mrs. Flood’s identity, but every time it seems like an answer has been found, the show flips the story on its head.

Doctor Who's showrunner has answered one of the biggest questions I still have about the show's Disney era, and it sounds very compelling.

One Doctor Who theory suggests Mrs. Flood is following companions across time and space, and if this is also correct, it means that Anita Dobson’s strange character knows that Belinda and the Doctor are supposed to meet. However, this doesn’t mean that Mrs. Flood isn’t the one who orchestrated the two crossing paths in the first place. The season 15 trailer shows Mrs. Flood at the Interstellar Song Contest, which implies she can also time travel, so she has the capabilities to take the Star Certificate to the Robots.

Mrs. Flood appears to be all knowing, and while it isn’t clear why she’d do this at the moment, there will be a reason. Perhaps she’s simply trying to make sure timelines stick to the correct path, or maybe she knows that in the future, the Doctor will need Belinda. The TARDIS can’t take Belinda home, and there’s a possibility that Mrs. Flood doesn’t want the new companion around on May 24, 2025, which seems to result in complete disaster for Planet Earth, as the end of “The Robot Revolution” hints at.

I think there is a good chance that the person who told the Doctor about Belinda in the first place is Mrs. Flood, although viewers will have to wait and see whether this is the case. Mrs. Flood is definitely more involved with the Doctor’s life than the Time Lord realizes, so it would make sense for her to be behind all of this.

2 Mundy Flynn Doesn't Know What Her Family Has Given Her

What If The Robots Took The Certificate From Belinda's Ancestor In The 51st Century?

To say that Doctor Who’s Belinda Chandra looks like Mundy Flynn is an understatement, as they are completely identical. The Doctor is just as perplexed as audiences over why their genetic material is such an exact match, but I think the reason could involve the Robots and the Star Certificate. What if the Star Certificate is Belinda’s heirloom, which is ed down through the generations up until the 51st century, and is eventually owned by Mundy?

Steven Moffat wrote some of the very best episodes of Doctor Who in the modern era and introduced all manner of incredible monsters and companions.

We know that Alan and the Robots have the Star Certificate in “The Robot Revolution,” but we don’t know when exactly they set off in search of it. Perhaps the time rupture opens in more than one place and sends the Robots to Mundy Flynn before they get to Alan. The Robots don’t appear to recognize faces, and they only identify Belinda when she says her name. So, if Mundy doesn’t confirm she is Belinda, the Robots may just take the Star Certificate and return their focus to finding Alan.

At the end of “Boom,” the Doctor implies that he will visit again and says goodbye to Mundy. If the Doctor keeps his word and does return to Kastarion 3, maybe Mundy shares this story with the Time Lord, and it’s her who tells him about Belinda in the first place. If anything, this would explain why the Doctor had to be careful about timelines when he reveals his run-in with Belinda’s ancestor to her in the TARDIS.

Mundy is an Anglican marine, so it’s a little odd that this theory suggests she doesn’t fight back against the Robots. However, if these hypothetical events occur before “Boom” instead, maybe there’s a reason for this. The war on Kastarion 3 is raging before “Boom,” and with so much Villengard technology around and people’s lives to save, perhaps Mundy is exactly like Belinda, and she’s more concerned about keeping others safe than what the Robots want.

1 The Villengard Provided The Robots With The Certificate

Could The Villengard And MissBelindaChandra Planets Be In The Same Galaxy?

While this new era of Doctor Who depicts the Villengard mainly as a weapon’s manufacturer, which is true, it is also a planet. Little is known about Doctor Who’s Villengard, but it is mentioned as being located in the center of the universe and a part of the “Seven Galaxies.” Knowledge of the Seven Galaxies is quite vague, too, although the Daleks’ Skaro is also situated there. Audiences don’t know where MissBelindaChandra is in the universe, but what if it’s a part of the Seven Galaxies?

Doctor Who is no stranger to a big mysterious corporation pulling the strings behind the scenes, like Torchwood or Bad Wolf, and maybe it’s now the Villengard’s time to shine.

The Daleks used to believe Skaro was the only planet in the Seven Galaxies to sustain life, but episodes like “Twice Upon a Time,” “Joy to the World,” and season 14 proves that the Villengard is still clearly thriving. The Robot technology comes from somewhere, and Alan advances it by several years when he arrives on MissBelindaChandra because of the time rupture, but what if the Villengard provides it initially? It’s implied the Villengard have access to time travel, like in “Joy to the World,” when they send the star seed from the 43rd century to the Time Hotel.

Depending on which part of time the Villengard are coming from, perhaps their involvement with the Star Certificate, Belinda, and even Mundy Flynn is a trap for the Doctor. The War Doctor causes the destruction of their weapon’s factories in the Doctor Who comic story “The Whole Thing's Bananas,” and it seems that the Villengard are also somewhat connected to Doctor Who’s Susan Twist debacle, too. Doctor Who is no stranger to a big mysterious corporation pulling the strings behind the scenes, like Torchwood or Bad Wolf, and maybe it’s now the Villengard’s time to shine.
