Doctor Who Explains Amy Pond's Pond Mystery From Season 5

Doctor Who Finally Answered An Old Question

Amy Pond and the Doctor wondered why there were no ducks in the Leadworth duck pond in Doctor Who season 5, episode 1, "The Eleventh Hour." Doctor Who posted a tease of Ncuti Gatwa's Christmas Special for 2024 in the form of a picture of The Timey Wimey newspaper, an invention of the show's. The Timey Wimey front page article discussed how a scientist infected the Leadworth duck pond with a chemical that turned it into a portal to Carnaby Street in 1973, explaining why there were no ducks on it in season 5's first episode.

The Timey Wimey newspaper confirmed that the Leadworth duck pond was a portal to another time, but Doctor Who was meant to have closed the cracks in time already. This creates a confusing scenario which could be resolved in a number of ways. Doctor Who season 5 explored the cracks of time in one of the series' most confusing but rewarding storylines, showing off new Doctor Matt Smith in all his heroic glory. The Doctor could have left some cracks still open, allowing for a lead-in to a Christmas Special or season 15 plot.

However, the duck pond doesn't necessarily constitute a crack in time, although the Doctor implied this in "Flesh & Stone." Although the cracks manifested in various ways in different places, time travel is also possible through other routes, such as the TARDIS. The portal to Carnaby Street via the Leadworth duck pond could easily be considered a road to another time that has nothing to do with the cracks created by the Silence in Doctor Who season 5. This would explain why it would still exist after the Doctor closed the cracks.
