The director of the Sex Education star Ncuti Gatwa will be taking over the role of the timelord from Jodie Whittaker. Further announcements have come thick and fast, including the confirmation that Yasmin Finney, who made her name in the recent hit series Heartstopper, will be taking on the role of Rose.
After Whittaker’s finale episode, Russell T Davies will be resuming command of the series as showrunner, with his first task being the celebration of the 60th anniversary. Doctor Who has a long held tradition of reuniting different versions of the Doctor, played by different actors, during anniversary specials. The 60th is set to continue that tradition, and it has already been confirmed that 10th Doctor actor David Tennant will be returning for the episode, along with fan-favorite companion Donna Noble. The return of Tennant has intensified speculation that the 60th anniversary special might include some other familiar faces, too. Peter Capaldi, who played the 12th doctor, has especially been the subject of intense speculation, after Talalay posted an image to social media showing her with Matt Lucas, who was the 12th doctor’s companion for part of his run.
Now, Talalay returns to social media to address the speculation, and it’s safe to say that the director is still keeping things vague. She makes it clear that she is unable to give any clarity about the rumors of Capaldi’s return, due to non-disclosure agreements. She also states that her selfie with Matt Lucas was just “tea with a friend.” Check out her post below:

Fans will want to question what information those NDAs might contain, and what other secrets the 60th anniversary still has in store. However, it’s clear the director isn’t able to give any information one way or another, until official announcements have been made. It’s likely that if Capaldi or other familiar faces are going to return, fans will get an official announcement sooner rather than later, in order to avoid the news spreading through leaks.
If Capaldi does make a return, it would be another huge moment for fans of the show, many of whom consider the actor’s take on the character to be one of the strongest throughout Doctor Who’s entire run. A returning Capaldi could open the door to even more previous versions of the doctor, like Eleventh Doctor Matt Smith, or even Ninth Doctor Christopher Eccleston, though logistics and complexity of fitting all the characters into the same episode might make that unlikely. Perhaps most of all, audiences will wonder how the returns of any characters fit in with Gatwa’s impending time in the role, and will hope that the actor isn’t overshadowed by any returning faces.
