A stunning new piece of cosplay proves Doctor Voodoo needs to succeed was once Sorcerer Supreme, at a time when Strange had stepped down from the title. Now, a cosplay shoot of @bishopcosplay by photographer José Izquierdo showcases the character in all his supernatural glory, proving he is ready for an MCU close-up.
Doctor Voodoo, or “Brother Voodoo” as he was once known, first appeared in 1973’s Strange Tales #169. The initial concept for the character came from Stan Lee, who along with Roy Thomas, wanted a heroic voodoo practitioner. From there, writer Len Wein and artist John Romita Sr designed the character’s look and backstory. Born Jericho Drumm, Doctor Voodoo was once a clinical psychologist, who returned to his home country of Haiti after many years away. His brother, Daniel, was a local houngan who was killed by a sorcerer. Jericho took up the study of Voodoo and sorcery, eventually becoming a powerful practitioner. He would fight alongside Doctor Strange and many other magical heroes over the years. When - duringr a brief period in the 2000s - Strange abandoned his post as Sorcerer Supreme, a contest was held to find his successor, and Jericho emerged victorious. Up until recently, Voodoo was also the Heaster at the Strange Academy, which teaches the next generation of magic-s.
An epic cosplay by @bishopcosplay, photographed by including the demonic dreamlord Nightmare.
Doctor Voodoo Is a Magical Powerhouse
Bishopcosplay’s Doctor Voodoo shoot is impressive and comic-accurate, and it could easily fit into the MCU’s aesthetic. Doctor Voodoo is one of the Marvel Universe’s most powerful magic s; he was always a contender for Sorcerer Supreme, and he even realized this ambition once. Although his time in the role was cut short, he still proved he has what it takes to fill Doctor Strange’s shoes. After Doctor Strange “blipped” out in Avengers: Infinity War, Wong took over the role of Sorcerer Supreme, showing himself worthy of the title. Fans have enjoyed him in the role, and while there's no rush to have Doctor Voodoo take the mantle, introducing him would at least serve to expand Marvel's mystical landscape beyond the forces of Kamar-Taj.
Doctor Voodoo is a fascinating character who - while heroic - has his own way of doing things separate to Doctor Strange. Marvel's world of magic is packed with fascinating vistas and terrifying enemies, some of which work far better with Drumm's style of magic than Strange's. With his own deities, spells, and his ghostly brother sometimes helping and sometimes hindering his efforts as a hero, Doctor Voodoo belongs in Marvel's mainstream, and this epic cosplay shows that the former Sorcerer Supreme is ready for the big screen.
