Warning: There are spoilers ahead for the Doctor Odyssey season 1 finale.
After 18 wild episodes, Doctor Odyssey has wrapped up its first season. The Doctor Odyssey season 1 finale was just as unbelievable as we have come to expect with this series, and that just made it more entertaining. In the end, a lot of decisions were made and careers seemed to be saved, but there are still many questions left.
Throughout the first season, we’ve had theories that this Ryan Murphy TV series is some sort of fever dream, and there have been plenty of will-they-won’t-they moments involving a certain throuple. While the finale certainly answered some of the season-long questions, it brought us a few more as decisions were made. At the same time, there are questions about whether there will be another Doctor Odyssey crossover with 9-1-1, and concerns about the future for multiple characters.
Does Tristan Really Accept Max And Avery Together (And Still Work With Them)?
Tristan Seems To Have Accepted Avery Isn’t The Right Woman For Him
During the Doctor Odyssey season 1 finale, Tristan (Sean Teale) accepted that he and Avery (Phillipa Soo) are not meant to be. As much as he likes her, and she has certainly shown feelings for him, there is another man she wants out of the Doctor Odyssey characters. Tristan even accepted Max’s (Joshua Jackson) apology for breaking the bro code, making it clear that he will find the right person for him somewhere.
Many will wonder if he accepts this, because he’s seemed to believe this in the past. Earlier in the season, he started hooking up with the chef, but it was clear that this was a way to the time and try to get over Avery. Things did seem different in the season 1 finale of the steamy cruise drama, but that doesn’t mean it will be easy working together.
Will Corporate Find A Way To Push Captain Massey Out?
Massey Is Still The Captain For Now
Corporate relieved Captain Massey (Don Johnson) of his duties in the finale after he refused to leave people behind. Monroe was temporarily put in charge, but Massey knew that this was meant to be permanent. Even when Monroe (Marcus Emanuel Mitchell) shared that he told corporate that he would leave if Massey was leaving, the loyal captain knew Monroe didn’t have the weight.
While Monroe didn’t have the weight alone, the entire cruise ship backing Massey was exactly what was needed to get corporate to change their minds. However, corporate eyes are now on the captain, and they could look for any reason to get rid of him in the future. The bosses could even purposely find a way to push him out, because then severance wouldn’t need to be paid out.
Is The "Max In Purgatory" Theory Fully Debunked Now?
Was Doctor Odyssey Ever A Fever Dream?
As soon as Max shared that he was Patient Zero in the COVID-19 pandemic, there were theories that the entire cruise ship was a coma dream. We know that he was in a coma for some time, and shows like Grey’s Anatomy have given us a look at theories about where people go when they’re in comas. It makes sense that we started to question whether Max was really on that ship and built the Doctor Odyssey coma theory.
With the way the emergency was quickly and conveniently solved, the theory hasn’t been fully debunked yet.
The series hasn’t seemed to completely rule out the idea of Max being in some sort of purgatory, though. He even mentions heaven, hell, and somewhere in between in the finale, but all of this could still be happening in his head. He wouldn’t exactly put himself in hell in his own coma, but Max being in purgatory in Doctor Odyssey would make sense. With the way the emergency was quickly and conveniently solved, the theory hasn’t been fully debunked yet.
Does Doctor Odyssey Season 1 Finale's Tsunami Connected To 9-1-1 Season 8 Ending Earthquake?
Both Ryan Murphy Shows Included An Earthquake
During 9-1-1 season 8, episode 17, an earthquake rocked Los Angeles, leading to an apartment building collapsing. It just so happened that a show in the same universe involved a tsunami and an earthquake. It’s plausible that the two are connected, and that this became an unofficial crossover. The location of the hike in Doctor Odyssey wasn’t exactly clear, so it could have been on the same tectonic plate that moved Los Angeles.

I think Doctor Odyssey may only be a one-season show, and that’s okay.
Although I’m deeply in love with all things Doctor Odyssey, I think the show may be a one-season-wonder, and that’s okay. While it’s clear that the show has some lofty plans moving ahead, I don’t know if Doctor Odyssey was meant to sustain itself in the long-term. Instead, I’d love to see a really gut-punching season of television end on fun , rather than go off the rails in the future.
The earthquake in L.A. was arguably a small one, measuring at 2.8. This would suggest that the main location of the earthquake was elsewhere, which could have been linked to the tsunami. It would make sense for the same emergency to affect the two shows, just creating a small Easter egg for viewers.
Can Tristan Find To Help Him With His Alcoholism?
Tristan Is Back to Day One In His Sobriety
Alcoholism is a serious disease, and nobody can fight it on their own. Tristan didn’t want to it that he suffered from alcoholism when it was brought up, and then he realized just how much he relied on it. At first, he seemed to be doing well, but then, after blowback from Avery, he drank heavily and suffered the aftereffects the next day.
With everything going on between Max and Avery, Tristan will need to deal with his feelings. That’s not easy when also handling sobriety, and Tristan has already shown that he can’t do this alone. He needs to find a system, and there is one on the ship, but he needs to be willing to turn to them for and help before he drinks again.
Is Avery Actually Going To Med School?
Avery Never Said She Was Actually Leaving
Throughout Doctor Odyssey season 1, Avery’s focus has been on going to med school, and she made it clear in the finale that she still wanted to do that. The main reason she didn’t want to be with Max was that she didn’t know how to be in a relationship and put her career first. Max is there to her in going to med school, but it’s worth noting that the finale didn’t end with Avery setting a date for when she was leaving.
If she really wants to do this, it’s time to take the leap of faith and have Max there to help her in any way that he can.
In fact, at the end of the finale, she was among the crew standing in solidarity with Captain Massey. This would suggest that she is sticking around on the ship for a while, and that means no med school yet. If she really wants to do this, it’s time to take the leap of faith and have Max there to help her in any way that he can.
Will Doctor Odyssey Season 2 Happen?
Ryan Murphy Holds All The Power
Out of all the ABC scripted dramas, Doctor Odyssey remains on the bubble. Just ahead of the Upfronts in May 2025, ABC confirmed that a final decision had still not been made on the series, sharing that it is up to Doctor Odyssey creator Ryan Murphy about whether it will continue or not. Now those who have fallen in love with the wackiness of the series want to know if there is more to come.

I’m Afraid Doctor Odyssey Doesn’t Know What To Do With 1 Character & It's Ruining The Show's Vibe
Doctor Odyssey's midseason premiere was full of exciting medical emergencies, but episode 9 only underscores its big issue with its main character.
Arguably, the show could work as a limited series, and that is something Murphy has done before. He often creates anthology series, meaning Doctor Odyssey could continue in a few years with a new ship and a new set of characters. However, we want more of the Max/Avery/Tristan drama, and that remains uncertain until Murphy gets an idea.
What Doctor Season 2 Might Be About After The Season 1 Finale
A New Nurse Practitioner Could The Cruise
Should Doctor Odyssey season 2 happen, and should it not turn into an anthology, there are storylines that the season 1 finale set up to continue. One of those is Avery going to med school, and since the show already gave us an episode with Max off the ship and in a physical hospital, it would be plausible to show us the cruise storyline and Avery in med school.
On top of that, there is a chance to further develop Tristan’s character, both in him fighting his alcoholism and finding the right woman for him.
This would then allow for a new nurse practitioner to the drama, which opens the door to someone else learning more about the lifestyle and the unbelievable medical emergencies that happen. On top of that, there is a chance to further develop Tristan’s character, both in him fighting his alcoholism and finding the right woman for him. With the themes of the week, the quirkiness of the drama would remain, making Doctor Odyssey still must-see TV.
