The forgotten romance between Doctor Doom and arguably her true love, Wolverine. However, perhaps her most interesting potential romantic connection was her oft-overlooked dynamic with Victor Von Doom.

Marvel has unveiled Marco Checchetto's variant cover for Storm #1 – written by Murewa Ayodele, with art by Lucas Werneck – which comes as part of a line of variants celebrating Dr. Doom's appointment as the Marvel Universe's latest Sorcerer Supreme.

The sight of Doom dipping Storm in a sort of waltz – all while draining her of her power – recalls past flirtations where they inched closer to a romance with each other. One has to wonder if this will be foreshadowing for the would-be couple to finally go all the way.

Storm and Doctor Doom have danced around the idea of romance with each other dating back to 1981's Uncanny X-Men #145, where Storm besieged Latveria in hopes of rescuing a kidnapped Arcade. Upon meeting, Doom and Storm shared food and flirtations over an impromptu dinner, with even Storm being surprised by how much she was charmed by Victor's advances. As it turned out, Arcade was never captured after all, as he collaborated with Doom to capture the X-Men. When all was said and done, Doom ended up apologizing to Storm, and they agree to wipe the slate clean from there.

The two would continue to run into each other over the years, including when Doom actually helped heal an injured Storm in Fantastic Four vs. X-Men #3, seemingly out of the kindness of his heart. Their most significant encounter came later in SWORD #6 and #7. This time, the tables were turned, Storm to re-introduce herself. Like their first meeting, this led to a flirtatious dinner, though once more it ended in hostilities.

If there was ever a right time for Doctor Doom and Storm to get together, it's now.

As Storm has been promoted with the Avengers. Their new official rankings suggest that another confrontation is inevitable, especially keeping in mind that one of the other variant covers released by Marvel depicts Doom destroying the Avengers. Not every variant cover usually depicts what could happen in the actual story, but on the off-chance this one does, Storm and Doom may be on equal enough power scales to finally justify romance. If there was ever a right time for Doctor Doom and Storm to get together, it's now.
