Warning: SPOILERS for Doc season 1, episode 10, "...Must Come Down."

The first season finale of Doc season 2 will have to handle a few new complications from that storyline, as well as a number of other developments in Amy’s life leading up to the season’s end.

Based on Italian series Doc – Nelle tue mani, Fox’s medical drama takes a number of cues from the life of real doctor Pierdante Piccioni. Much like Amy, Doc’s real-life inspiration suffered a car accident that robbed him of years’ worth of memories. However, Doc veers away from Piccioni’s real life rather quickly, and it’s very much its own story by the end of the season. This means season 2 can take any number of directions, provided it doesn’t leave too many of season 1’s unanswered questions hanging.

10 Will Richard Keep His Medical License?

It Seems Impossible That There’s Even A Chance

Scott Wolf as Richard Miller in Doc

Before Amy found out that Richard attempted to gaslight her and weaponize her memory loss to convince her she was responsible for Dixon’s death, it was ultimately her guilt that pushed her to seek answers and learn the truth. Once Amy reveals Richard’s culpability to Max and Michael, Max tells Richard that he’ll have to go before the board and will likely have his license suspended. But it’s hard to believe that he wouldn’t suffer any more extreme consequences than that after everything he’s done.

Doc Season 1 Finale's Richard Cliffhanger Addressed By Star: "That Was A Great Bait-And-Switch"

EXCLUSIVE: Doc star Jon-Michael Ecker has given his views on the hit Fox medical drama's shocking Richard finale cliffhanger and what it means.

Like Amy told him from the beginning, things might have been fine if Richard came clean right away. Now, however, he’s spent three months lying to both the patient’s widow and the board. He also tried to cover up autopsy results and frame a colleague for his own mistake, not to mention threatening a nurse so that she’d corroborate his story. If mes Dixon’s medication wasn’t enough to get Richard fired with a full revocation of his medical license, certainly piling on numerous other infractions (some of which seem like they should be actual crimes) would do the trick.

9 What Happens To Lucas If Richard Loses His Job?

He Needs More Care Than An Unemployed Parent Can Afford

Dr. Miller looks shocked in Doc

One of the reasons Richard was distracted while treating Dixon in the first place was because he’d just received a call that his son Lucas was arrested for taking a swing at a cop. Lucas’ mental condition has played a huge role in developing the more sympathetic side of Richard’s character, and it’s been made abundantly clear that Richard and his wife have neither the time nor the mental wherewithal to provide the care Lucas needs at home.

The severity of Lucas’ condition as described likely necessitates long-term care, so the odds that he’ll be ready to return home by the time the medical board makes their decision regarding Richard are incredibly slim.

Lucas is currently receiving inpatient therapy, but those services aren’t generally cheap. Moreover, while Richard undoubtedly has excellent insurance coverage, he more than likely receives healthcare benefits as a result of his position at the hospital. If Richard winds up losing his job, which he probably should, that could really complicate things at home. The severity of Lucas’ condition as described likely necessitates long-term care, so the odds that he’ll be ready to return home by the time the medical board makes their decision regarding Richard are incredibly slim.

8 Is Mr. Coleman’s Paralysis Really Healed?

Amy’s Prognosis Wasn’t As Accurate As It Seemed

Patrick Walker as TJ Coleman in Doc

TJ spent the better part of the season’s last two episodes resentful toward Amy for the course of treatment she recommended for his father’s paralysis, but the problem is ultimately resolved when Mr. Coleman heals suddenly offscreen. Based on everything the medical team discussed about Mr. Coleman’s condition, this essentially means that the hospital’s most accomplished neurosurgeon misdiagnosed him while Amy once again got it right by assuming a rare condition that nobody else would have guessed.

If Coleman’s improved health turns out to be temporary, then Amy’s problems with TJ will be far from over.

Except that Amy wasn’t fully right, either. Amy told TJ that his father would start healing within hours of his first treatment if she had correctly diagnosed him, but TJ’s anger partly stemmed from the fact that Mr. Coleman showed no progress at all for over 24 hours after treatment began. This opens up the possibility that Amy’s assessment wasn’t actually as accurate as she thought. If Coleman’s improved health turns out to be temporary, then Amy’s problems with TJ will be far from over.

7 Will Jake Wind Up With Sonya?

Their Potential Future’s Been Set Up From The Start

Sonya’s been making bedroom eyes at best friend Jake since Doc’s series premiere, and she was clearly upset by the news that Jake and Amy had been canoodling in the parking lot between rounds. But Jake clearly saw his relationship with Amy as more than just a physical fling with his boss. It was never entirely clear whether Amy returned his feelings, but the fact that she’s continuing to make out with Michael while avoiding Jake entirely doesn’t bode well for their relationship’s future.

Doc Season 1 Finale Ending Explained By Jake Actor Jon Ecker

ScreenRant interviews star Jon Ecker about his work on Doc season 1, episode 10 where his character Jake experiences a heartbreaking shock.

3

The season 1 finale of Doc ends at the very moment Jake sees Amy and Michael together, so it’s implausible that season 2 wouldn’t address that storyline right off the bat. Even if Jake can understand the complicated feelings Amy must have about waking up to learn she’s no longer married to the man she loves, it still seems like it would be unfair to expect him and Amy to stay together. And while Jake broke off his friendship with Sonya when she tried to warn him, he might appreciate her a lot more now that he’s learned the truth.

6 Who Will Michael Pick Between Amy And Nora?

He Should’ve Picked Nora In The First Place, But Here We Are

The whole time Amy’s been avoiding Jake, Michael’s been doing the same thing to Nora. After she learned about the affair, he promised they’d talk about it when he got home from work. He tells her on the phone the next morning that he couldn’t make it because he had to work all night, but there’s no clear evidence when Michael wakes up on his office couch that he actually needed to pull an all-nighter there. The fact that he spends the next night making out with Amy in his office suggests where his loyalties really lie.

Amy's Doc Episode 6 Wins Sets Up A Dark Path For Michael

Amy Larsen’s wins with her daughter Katie and love interest Jake Heller in Doc episode 6 sets up a dark path for her ex-husband Michael Hamda.

1

It’s a major issue for the series because it renders two of the characters viewers are supposed to root for almost completely unlikable. They might have a lot of complex history, but Nora is expecting Michael’s baby. It would be almost impossible to redeem his character if he leaves his pregnant wife after cheating on her twice, and even the cheating alone is damaging enough that his redemption can’t happen overnight. Fortunately, season 2 has an extended count of 22 episodes to make it happen.

5 How Will Katie React To Her Parents’ Affair?

She Might Not Be All That ive

Katie smiles down at someone in Doc

Katie hasn’t really had the closest relationship with Nora, and the fact that her dead brother’s about to be replaced by a newer model hasn’t helped much. But Katie’s not exactly a hateful person, either. The promise of her parents potentially getting back together might not excite her once she learns about the circumstances, particularly the part where Michael cheated on his pregnant wife with a sobbing woman at the height of her emotional distress.

The only other option is that Katie doesn’t judge them for their affair, but her character seems far too pure for that.

Things could become even more tense if Michael and Amy actually get back together. Katie’s living with Amy to reconnect with her, but she largely based that decision on Amy’s improved personality after the accident. Learning that Amy is still self-serving and willing to make decisions that disregard innocent people’s feelings would hurt Katie deeply, but she’ll have nowhere else to go without seeing a parent who let her down by getting together the wrong way. The only other option is that Katie doesn’t judge them for their affair, but her character seems far too pure for that.

4 Is The Hospital Facing A Lawsuit?

Dixon’s Widow Could Be A Major Threat

Deborah Grover as Patty Dixon in Doc

Amy only learned the truth about Richard after going to visit Dixon’s widow, Patty. When Amy tried to it that she had wrongly prescribed the beta blocker that led to Bill Dixon’s death, Patty revealed that she was there during his discharge and knows for a fact that Bill wasn’t prescribed metoprolol. This was enough to steer Amy toward the truth. Unfortunately, it’s also enough that Patty Dixon could sue the hospital for a significant sum of money.

I Don't Know Anymore Who To Root For After Amy's Plot Twist In The Doc Season Finale

The season 1 finale of Doc wraps up a major ongoing storyline, but it’s hard to say afterward whether Amy is truly the hero of her own story.

1

The hospital has malpractice insurance, which is one of the reasons Amy had told Richard to come clean in the first place. But making a fatal mistake isn’t nearly as bad as lying to a patient’s widow about it for three whole months. Amy advised Max to pay Patty Dixon anything she demands, but the media coverage on lawsuits is often seen as a method of ensuring public ability. If Patty cares more about that than about receiving a payout, the hospital could be in big trouble.

3 How Long Will Gina Take To Forgive Amy?

It Doesn’t Seem Like Her Resentments Are Entirely New

Amirah Vann as Gina Walker and Omar Metwally as Michael Hamda in Doc

Most of Gina’s storyline has revolved solely around Amy, but that changes drastically in the Doc season 1 finale. When a enger train derails and floods the hospital with emergency trauma patients, Gina blames herself for the incident after learning it was caused by one of her patients. Michael comforts her through the worst of it, but she resents Amy for not having been there for her when she needed it most. She doesn’t formally end their friendship, but she makes it clear that she needs some time apart.

Why Sonya Really Hates Amy Humanizes Doc's Villain (But I Have 1 Problem With It)

Doc episode 7 reveals more context for Dr. Sonya Maitra's resentment against Dr. Amy Larsen, but Sonya’s devastating backstory feels too rushed.

In Amy’s defense, Gina’s viewpoint isn’t entirely fair. Amy did notice Gina was upset and tried to ask about it, but their conversation was interrupted when the police showed up to chastise Gina for her patient’s actions. After that, Amy was too preoccupied with medical emergencies to revisit the discussion. Amy also had her own guilt to process, since she still believed Richard’s story about Dixon. Gina might forgive Amy upon realizing all of this, but her confession that she’s resented Amy since before her TBI suggests a break in their friendship might have been a long time coming.

2 Who Will Be The Hospital’s Next Chief?

Amy’s A Bit Overconfident To Assume It’ll Be Her

Darrin Baker as Max Garner in Doc

Even if Richard miraculously keeps his job, which probably depends more on Scott Wolf’s availability than it does on reason, it seems unlikely he can keep his position as chief. When Max tells Amy that speaking with Patty Dixon without board approval is going to have consequences, Amy tells Max that the board won’t punish her at all and that they’ll be lucky if she accepts a promotion to chief in a few months. The protagonist in the original Italian series does indeed wind up regaining his position in later seasons, but it seems like less of a certainty here.

Her bedside manner has certainly improved, but it’s hard to imagine most of the staff wanting to work under her right now.

The biggest issue is that, as Max pointed out, Amy potentially put a huge burden on the hospital’s legal department by telling Patty how her husband died without giving them a chance to prepare for any possible fallout. Second, Amy’s still as bad about steamrolling her colleagues as she was before her injury. Her bedside manner has certainly improved, but it’s hard to imagine most of the staff wanting to work under her right now. Other than her, the only likely candidate might be Jake, assuming the show doesn’t simply introduce a new character as an outside hire.

1 Will Amy Ever Regain Her Memories?

It Happened In The Italian Series, But With A Twist

When she was first recovering from her TBI, the possibility of Amy eventually regaining her memories was briefly mentioned. Since then, it hasn’t come up much apart from Richard’s attempts to make sure she hadn’t ed what happened with Dixon. But it’s still a lingering possibility, especially since the protagonist of the original Italian series does get his memories back in season 3. Doc has already strayed from its source material quite a bit, so there’s no reason to think Amy couldn’t get her memories back sooner if she recovers them at all.

Doc: Why Amy Took Danny's Death Harder Than Michael When They're Both At Fault

Doc sets up a gripping situation between Dr. Amy Larsen and her husband, Michael, who lost their son Danny in Fox's new medical procedural show.

1

If Fox’s version does decide to mimic the Italian series, getting her memories back won’t be much of a picnic. The original series’ main character didn’t get his memories in full, and many of them were significantly altered because his subconscious mind had merely manufactured them to fill in his real memories’ gaps. This could be an extremely interesting route for Doc to take in season 2. Otherwise, the series only has so long before the central hook of Amy’s memory loss just won’t feel relevant to the story anymore.
