Game of Thrones star, Peter Dinklage, is not impressed with Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. One of the latest movies from Disney to get the live-action remake treatment, Snow White has been in the works for a few years now. Although it was first announced in 2016, it was only recently that news broke that Gal Gadot would be playing the part of the Evil Queen, while breakout star Rachel Zegler (West Side Story) will play the title role of Snow White.

The film has also locked in Marc Webb to direct, (The Amazing Spider-Man, La La Land) while Marc Platt (The Greatest ShowmanLa La Land) will be on board as producer.  Taking over the writing duties will be Greta Gerwig, (Lady Bird, Little Women) and new original music scores from La La Land duo Benj Pasek and Justin Paul will also be featured in the film. Little else is known at this point what the remake will have in store as far as a release date or specific plot details.

Recently, on the podcast WTF with Marc Maron, Dinklage dunked on the new Disney remake, saying “It’s f—king backwards.” The Cyrano star was discussing Disney’s decision to cast a Latina actress (Zegler), but pointed out the hypocrisy behind the studio doing a film that has a “backward story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together.” Dinklage continued by saying that he would be all for a remake that had a “cool or progressive spin on it.” The full quote can be read below:

“Literally no offense to anyone, but I was a little taken aback when they were very proud to cast a Latina actress as Snow White. But you’re still telling the story of ‘Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.’ Take a step back and look at what you’re doing there. It makes no sense to me. You’re progressive in one way but then you’re still making that fucking backwards story about seven dwarfs living in a cave together, what the fuck are you doing, man? Have I done nothing to advance the cause from my soap box? I guess I’m not loud enough. I don’t know which studio that is but they were so proud of it. All love and respect to the actress and all the people who thought they were doing the right thing. But I’m just like, what are you doing?

Snow White and the Seven Dwarves

The iconic animated film was the first from Disney and premiered nearly 85 years ago. Since then, it has received numerous live-action remakes, from Mirror Mirror to the more recent Snow White and the Seven Huntsman, the latter of which took on a darker tone. Given the popularity of their more recent live-action remakes, it’s no surprise that Disney is continuing to scour their backlog of animated films to adapt for new generations, even if some of them haven’t necessarily aged well.

The live-action re-telling of animated source material has been somewhat of a hit or miss with Disney in recent years. While some have proven to be more successful than others, it’s clear that there’s a balance that needs to be struck between being faithful to the source material, while also putting a fresh spin on an old story. This isn’t just the case with Disney, however. Netflix has also had its fair share of live-action adaptations that have split fans down the middle. However, with the newly announced talent on and off screen, fans have plenty to look forward to with this Snow White remake.
