As it nears its second anniversary this fall, the popular tabletop card game (TCG) Disney Lorcana is continuing to grow and evolve as the number of devoted players and collectors climbs with each new set. As more people discover this card game featuring the beloved and often iconic characters from various Disney movies, Ravensburger and Disney have continued to use the of the community to slowly make changes to the game. This often means new cards, characters, and game mechanics, but soon the game will also be expanded to feature two new card rarity types: Epic and Iconic.
Whether it's introducing card mechanics such as dual-ink cards and locations, or banning cards from competitive play after players discover unexpected ways to make them overpowered, Disney Lorcana seems to have notable changes taking place every few months. Just announced earlier today, on May 6, 2025, Disney Lorcana is about to grow even larger with the addition of two new card rarities to the mix. This announcement comes as the result of many fans in the community having requested greater collectibility for cards in the game, and will start taking place in the ninth set, Fabled.
Disney Lorcana's New Epic And Iconic Rarities
Beginning With Disney Lorcana's Fabled Set
The new card rarities being added to Disney Lorcana include Epic and Iconic, and will each feature new rainbow-colored icons at the bottom of their respective cards.
Epic cards will fall in between the previously established Legendary and Enchanted rarities, being more rare than Legendary but not as hard to find as Enchanted. Epic cards will be alternate versions of existing cards, with numbering that goes above the base card numbering, similar to Enchanted; however, they will utilize existing art found on Standard cards. They use an "open air" card frame and special rainbow foil treatment, with a holofoil treatment on the icons and a gloss treatment on the artwork.

Disney Lorcana Cards - Rarity, Types, Ink, Glimmers, & Lore
Disney Lorcana is designed as a simple deck-builder for all to enjoy, but it also offers depth in available strategies and an engaging story as well.
Iconic cards are now the rarest card type in Disney Lorcana, with only two appearing in each set. These are alternate versions of existing cards featuring full card alternate artwork which continues to be visible behind the text. There is a 3D hot stamp effect on the card which has a raised texture and detail on certain portions, including the ink requirement in the top left. Finally, these Iconic cards will use a custom lore star foil pattern to add a Lorcana shimmer effect.
The first two Iconic cards will feature the most iconic of Disney characters, Mickey and Minnie, in the Disney Lorcana: Fabled set coming in September 2025.
There Are Now Eight Rarity Types In This TCG
Plus Promo Cards From Events
With the addition of Epic and Iconic card rarity types it brings the total number of rarities in Disney Lorcana to eight, unless you include promo cards. Promo cards can include special cards from Disney events, tournament and Set Championship promo cards, and other promotional cards for things like gift sets and more. Promo cards use their own unique denotations and numbering systems separate from the sets that are released at the same time.
Ranging from the most common to the hardest to pull, all eight types are listed here:
- Common
- Uncommon
- Rare
- Super Rare
- Legendary
- Epic
- Enchanted
- Iconic
Common cards, as the name suggests, remain the easiest types of cards to find and Common through Legendary cards are all included in the standard numbering format of 1 through 204. Other than the pull rates and the icon at the bottom, they look similar to each other, though often the higher rarity cards also include better play mechanics. Epic, Enchanted, and Iconic cards each go into the secret card territory, with numbers that go above the base. Each of these are alternate versions of cards in the standard set, but with differing artwork and effects.
What The Epic And Iconic Rarities Mean For Disney Lorcana Fans
Even More Stunning Artwork To Hunt For
Bringing Epic and Iconic into the mix is the first time the rarity types have been expanded since the game was first released in 2023, and is a move focused more on collectors than players, although everyone will feel likely the excitement. There is no exact word yet on how it will affect the general pull rates for each of the types of cards, including the already established types. Naturally, Iconic cards will be extremely rare to come by, but otherwise it may improve the odds for some collectors to get the fancier versions of cards now that Epic quality exists.
Ultimately, the goal behind this change is to make opening packs more exciting, with even more beautiful cards to hunt for and a greater opportunity to find the special Epic quality cards, as they are less rare than the current Enchanted type. The Epic cards may not feature new artwork, but the glimmer and shine on them and the open air card frame will still make them something worth pulling. And, of course, anyone lucky enough to find one of the Iconic cards in a pack will see a truly beautiful new style of card that is going to be the prize card for any collector.
Lorcana Is Looking To The Collectors With A New Collection Starter Set
Listening To The Fans Who Love The Artwork
Also releasing with the Fabled set of Disney Lorcana is a new Collection Starter Set, made especially to help Disney fans to start collecting cards from this TCG, even if they don't have an interest in playing the game. As Elaine Chase, the Chief Marketing Officer for TCGs at Ravensburger, said, "The Collection Starter Set is the perfect way for Disney-lovers to jump into and start collecting cards and showing off their favorite characters and moments from Disney classics." This set will include a collector's guide, a special card binder, four booster packs, and a promo card of "Tinker Bell - Giant Fairy".

With this Collection Starter Set and the Epic and Iconic card rarity types taking place in the same set, it shows how focused Ravensburger is on providing plenty for the collectors with this expansion set. However, there are still many more changes happening with the two-year anniversary of the game to keep everyone on their toes, whether it is someone who plays competitively or simply enjoys making themed collections of cards. Each new set brings new announcements, and it is clear that Disney Lorcana is going to keep bringing excitement for both players and collectors for a long time.
