Disney Lorcana Starter Deck List: Every Card In Every Deck

Disney Lorcana Gateway set is available for the express purpose of teaching and learning the game.

Disney Lorcana cards each have types based on the origin of the character pictured, and their role in the story - these are varied but include descriptors such as Storyborn, Princess, Ally, and so on. They’re also divided into six color-coded categories known as inks: Emerald, Ruby, Steel, Sapphire, Amber, and Amethyst. Each ink leans towards specific strategies, and decks cannot consist of more than two inks. While many may scoff at the strength of a pre-made deck in play, each starter deck is surprisingly effective and well-balanced against not only each other but can often hold up against custom decks.

The First Chapter Set

The Emerald and Ruby starter deck for Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter is good for players who like to focus more on aggressive play. Ruby ink cards generally encourage a lot of challenging opponents and taking a forceful approach, giving the player plenty of options to throw the opponent off their stride. Emerald ink cards are much more flexible, which in this case provides the necessary means to gather Lore during a game.

The First Chapter Set

Amber and Amethyst in Disney Lorcana can provide a good defensive deck and is ideal for beginners to the game, as Amber ink focuses on cards while Amethyst is all about magic. The cards in these inks are generally a bit more straightforward than some others, and are good at gathering Lore, while also protecting against opponent attacks. This can be an intensely frustrating strategy for the Amber and Amethyst player's opponent. Many cards in this deck are pretty weak on their own, which means the opponent can easily counter if they have more powerful Character cards, particularly in the late game.

Rise Of The Floodborn Set

For Disney Lorcana's second set, two new Rise of the Floodborn starter decks were released, but these decks do not only consist of cards from the new set. Both of these starter decks include some cards from The First Chapter set, helping to establish the idea for players new to TCGs that cards can be mixed in decks, as long as only two ink types are used. The Amethyst and Steel ink combination in this case provides not only a lot of humor and good strategy between Merlin and Madam Mim cards, but the overall feel of the deck is good for having a lot of low-cost cards in play all the time.

Rise Of The Floodborn Set

Again, the Rise of the Floodborn Amber and Sapphire Deck combines cards from that set and The First Chapter. Amber ink introduces all the Seven Dwarfs characters in Rise of the Floodborn, and when combined with the item-heavy Sapphire ink cards, this deck becomes one that is very heavy on strategy. With the cohesion that the Seven Dwarfs offer each other and the various buffs from items, it can be a challenging deck to master but very effective.

Into The Inklands Set

Disney Lorcana: Into The Inklands added location cards to the game, which was met with both positive and negative from players, but ultimately added another level of strategy that could be employed. To give a slower start for this new gameplay mechanic, only two locations were added for each starter deck, one for each color. This Amber and Emerald starter deck focused a lot on the Dalmatian puppies, which also included a new way to play, by allowing a player to have up to 99 copies of the tail wagger cards in one single deck — though, the starter deck did not do that, thankfully.

The Ruby and Sapphire combination starter deck for Into the Inklands includes many of the familiar family of ducks, including Scrooge McDuck and his nephews, Huey, Dewey, and Louie. Although there are many cards related to Moana characters as well, many players began dubbing this as the Scrooge deck. Amber and Amethyst was a combination that was already seen as a starter deck in The First Chapter, but bringing it back for Ursula's Return has an entirely different flavor. This deck is called the "Madrigal Magic" deck, and for good reason. Most of the characters in this starter deck are the Madrigal family from Disney's Encanto. Even the location card is Casa Madrigal. Even if a player is not a fan of Encanto, this deck features wonderful blends of mechanics that harmonize with each other and help players learn how to use different cards together strategically.

Ursula's Return Set

The Sapphire and Steel combination was also seen in Disney Lorcana: The First Chapter, and it proves yet again to be a strong combo. The strength of Steel ink cards can be an aggressive approach, and this choice of Sapphire ink cards focuses on a strong showing of Princesses that can also hold their own. While Sapphire is typically known for being more of an item-heavy, strategic ink, this deck combo has a good amount of strength from both colors.

Shimmering Skies Set

The fifth set for Disney Lorcana follows the usual pattern by introducing two more starter decks, beginning with the Amethyst and Ruby Shimmering Skies deck. However, this is the first starter deck to be composed entirely of cards only from the new set. This beautiful deck leans heavily into the candy racers from Wreck-It Ralph, including the headlining Vanellope von Schweetz, on the Ruby side. Meanwhile, the Amethyst cards feature characters from Frozen 2.

Shimmering Skies Set

The combination of Emerald and Steel inks is not seen often, but this Shimmering Skies starter deck demonstrates how the tactics can synergize well. The sheer number of hyenas from The Lion King makes this deck a vicious one for opponents, and the new Tug-Of-War Action card is a wonderful addition for helping players who are facing off against Evasive-heavy decks without making it a pointless card for non-Evasives. Combined with the beautiful artwork of the Shimmering Skies set, this starter deck is a good addition to a collection and is well-balanced.

Azurite Sea Set

Surprisingly, this is the first time that Amber and Ruby inks have been put together for a starter deck, although Amber is a generally versatile ink that works well with all types of decks. Combined with Ruby, this deck has a more offensive feeling and is thematically filled with Pirates. From Winnie the Pooh characters to Treasure Planet, the pirates are strong when using this deck. As was said in Screen Rant's review of the starter deck, the "Moana - Kakamora Leader" is a standout card for the deck with the ability to move characters to a location and gain one lore for each moved.

Sapphire ink is known for being heavy on items, and this Emerald and Sapphire combination starter deck leans into that with a theme of Inventors throughout the card choices. These cards can take a bit more planning ahead to be most effective, but can create some incredible strategies to hinder opponents quickly. With so many Inventor cards included, the "Hiro Hamada - Team Leader" card will be a must-have with its ability to give +1 Resist to all Inventors if Hiro is in play.

By releasing starter decks as each new set comes out, even longtime players are introduced to new strategies that they may not have thought of previously. It is interesting to see that Shimmering Skies starter decks do not have any cards from previous sets, but then Azurite Sea has a mix of only sets 5 and 6. Of course, players can still mix and match cards from all sets as long as a deck has no more than two inks represented. Any of these starter decks are easy ways to be able to jump into playing Disney Lorcana, and are key items of every set release.
