Disney Lorcana is quickly becoming one of the biggest TCGs of all time, even despite the fact that it has only been around for a short while. It's a genuinely well-crafted game that is perfectly positioned to target newcomers to any trading card game while also retaining a lot of the qualities that entice veterans. However, while Lorcana is a wonderful TCG, it still has a lot that it needs to learn in order to reach the top.

Namely, Disney Lorcana needs to learn from its biggest competition, the Pokémon TCG. Despite having several great starting points for newcomers, Disney Lorcana is missing something that the Pokémon TCG has mastered that could easily bring in millions more players. Fortunately, there is still plenty of time for it to learn and perhaps even beat the Pokémon TCG at its own game.

Disney Lorcana Really Needs A Playable App

It Should Learn From Its Competitors

Disney Lorcana is easily one of the most successful TCGs currently available thanks to its easy-to-learn rules, familiar IP, and a steady stream of new and interesting cards. It is becoming so popular that it's seeping into real-life events, with collaborations and marketing pushes helping to bring it to a whole new audience who may feel overwhelmed by the competition. However, while Disney Lorcana continues to be successful on the table, it's not dominating in the one place it should be.

Disney Lorcana doesn't have a digital version - outside the fan-created Pixelborn - and that is a genuine shame. Mobile versions of TCGs especially tend to do extremely well from both a commercial standpoint and as a streamlined onboarding process for new players. A free-to-play version of an already extremely expensive hobby allows those who aren't willing to splash a lot of cash on a TCG they may not like to give it a try.

Pokémon TCG Reached New Audiences With Pocket - And Lorcana Should Take Note

It'll Help Introduce New Players To The Game

Of course, the closest comparison point is the new Pokémon TCG Pocket, which has so successfully translated the tabletop experience that it made millions almost immediately. It has garnered a huge fanbase, ushering in a swathe of new fans, just like the previous Pokémon smash-hit mobile game, Pokémon GO. Of course, Pocket succeeds so well because it's based on the extremely strong foundations of the original TCG and has relatively fair monetization that encourages those uninterested in spending money to check it out.

Now that Lorcana has established itself as a genuine competitor to thePokémon TCG and Magic: The Gathering, it finally has that strong foundation from which to create a mobile version. There are more than enough cards to start prospective players off with, and the ability to play it with others online would widen the pool of players greatly for those who don't have a friend to play with in person.

Lorcana may need to hurry up too, as TCG Pocket Lorcana's new competition and Magic: The Gathering, which continues to improve its digital offerings.

Will We Get A Playable Disney Lorcana App?

It Is Only A Matter Of Time

Disney Lorcana fans have been calling for a mobile version for quite some time, and, frankly, it's only a matter of time before it happens. Much like how Pokémon GO spawned and continues to spawn copycats, Pokémon TCG Pocket will likely inspire a new wave of TCG mobile games. That's not to say there weren't successful examples beforehand, with the likes of Hearthstone generating billions in revenue. However, when it comes to adapting real-life tabletop TCG games, Pocket has proven it can be done incredibly successfully.

Disney will undoubtedly see the success of Pocket and want to share in that glory. Disney Lorcana is simple enough that it could easily be adapted to a mobile format, and the ever-growing list of cards only sweetens the deal for new players. With the possibility of crossover events with movies as well as exclusive cards, there is simply no reason why Lorcana won't get a mobile version eventually.

However, it remains to be seen how quickly a Lorcana mobile game can be put into production. Hopefully, Disney and Ravensburger already have one in the works, but it is likely a little while away regardless. Fortunately, Disney Lorcana is showing absolutely no signs of slowing down, with its playerbase only getting bigger, so a mobile game, while maybe potentially months or even years away, will come eventually.
