Big things are happening in the world of the Disney Lorcana Trading Card Game (TCG), as the game continues to evolve based on player and collector . Disney Lorcana is celebrating its second anniversary this fall and making big plans to kick off its third year with a bang. Two new card rarities the packs, as well as a competitive card rotation strategy that inspired the formation of a new tournament type. If all that wasn't exciting enough, the highly requested characters from Darkwing Duck and A Goofy Movie are confirmed to be in the works as well.
In a flurry of announcements this morning, May 6, 2025, the team at Ravensburger gave a sneak peek of what is to come in the next chapters of Disney Lorcana. Much of the news centers around the ninth set, Fabled, which will be releasing this September and kicks off the third year for Disney Lorcana, although there was also more about the next set Reign of Jafar, which launches in June. This includes news of a new Illumineer's Quest - Palace Heist that will focus on defeating Jafar.
Disney Lorcana Mixes Things Up With New Card Rarities
Epic And Iconic Card Types Added
One of the biggest changes coming to Disney Lorcana this fall is the announcement that two new card rarities are being added to the game, Epic and Iconic. Both these card rarities will feature alternate versions of existing cards in their sets and be numbered above the standard set.
Epic cards will be easier to find than Enchanted but more rare than Legendary cards. They will use existing art found on Standard cards but feature an "open air" card frame and special rainbow foil treatment. A holofoil treatment will be used on all icons on the cards, with a gloss treatment on the artwork. Though not quite as impressive as the Enchanted and Iconic cards, they are still beautiful renditions that should prove to be exciting for anyone lucky enough to pull one from a pack.
Iconic cards are rarer than Enchanted, with only two Iconic cards being designed for each set. In Fabled, when these cards debut, the first two Iconic cards will feature Mickey and Minnie in full alternate artwork that fills the card, even behind the text. These Iconic cards have a custom lore star foil pattern to shimmer in the light, and raised 3D hot stamp effects on certain portions.
Infinity Constructed Tournament And New Set Rotations For Competitive Play
Core Constructed And Infinity Constructed Tournaments
To keep things fresh for competitive play, the Core Constructed tournaments for Disney Lorcana will begin featuring a set rotation system each year which only keeps the current and previous year's sets available for play. Therefore, beginning with the launch of Fabled, the four sets that launched in year one will be banned from Core Constructed play. Then, in the fall of 2026, the four sets from year two will additionally be banned. In Fabled, players will find there are several reprints of cards from year one to keep them active in the current rotation.
Because not everyone will enjoy having this limitation, a new tournament type was announced called Infinity Constructed. Though some banned Lorcana cards will remain banned in Infinity Constructed, it will have a separate ban list from that of Core Constructed and will be much more open to utilizing any card from the history of the game as sets will never rotate out of Infinity Constructed.
Darkwing Duck Is Finally Making His Way To Disney Lorcana In 2026
Also A Goofy Movie Confirmed For This September
Disney has no shortage of characters and movies for Lorcana to pull from, and many fans have their own most-requested favorite characters they are still hoping to see come to the game. Among these, one of the most asked-for characters is none other than the terror that flaps in the night, Darkwing Duck. At long last, Darkwing Duck is confirmed to be coming to Disney Lorcana in 2026. Additionally, A Goofy Movie will be making its debut in the TCG with Fabled's launch in September, and Bambi in Reign of Jafar.
With all these changes and more, the team behind Disney Lorcana has been working hard to ensure that the game continues to evolve based on the they receive from the community. They are working to add greater excitement for both players and collectors with the addition of new rarities, and are keeping the gameplay fresh with set rotations in Disney Lorcana competitive play.
