WARNING! This article contains major SPOILERS for Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7!The reveal that Dexter: Original Sin’s timeline kicking off 15 years before the main series, the Miami Metro that’s introduced in the prequel is almost identical to the station in Dexter, all the way from the culture and personnel dynamics to the design and, frankly, obliviousness. As it turns out, Miami Metro was hiring people with Dark engers long before Dexter Morgan.

Throughout Original Sin season 1, Miami Metro has been working to solve the case of who kidnapped and murdered Jimmy Powell, the son of a prominent Miami judge. After Powell’s death, Captain Aaron Spencer’s young son, Nicky, was also captured, with his severed finger then being send to the station. Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7 finally revealed who the masked man was, and it happens to be none other than Captain Aaron Spencer himself. This twist was widely theorized by fans, and its confirmation certainly makes Miami Metro’s reputation worse than it already was in the main series.

Captain Aaron Spencer Being A Killer Makes Fan Complaints About Miami Metro's Inefficiency Even Worse

Miami Metro Has Had Killers Working Right Under Their Noses Multiple Times

Throughout all eight seasons of the original Dexter show, there was a common fan complaint that Miami Metro quite simply isn’t an effective department. That’s already been firmly established by the homicide department’s disappointing 18% solve rate in Original Sin, but it continues well into the main Dexter series. While these numbers are already unacceptable for the department, the fact that they frequently find themselves hiring killers like Aaron Spencer and Dexter makes their poor performance in generally solving homicides even worse.

It was one thing for Dexter to never be caught, as Harry gave him strict guidelines to avoid that, but also having their captain secretly be the killer they’re actively looking for indicates that Miami Metro is genuinely not good at their jobs. Even still, there were numerous occasions in which Dexter was sloppy and should have been caught by more effective coworkers. It was hard to believe that Sergeant James Doakes was the only one onto him in Dexter’s early seasons, but it makes much more sense after seeing Captain Spencer operate right under their noses in Original Sin.

Original Sin's Aaron Spencer Twist Confirms A Wildly Harsh Reality About Miami Metro

Miami Metro Needs A Much Better Screening Process When Hiring

Captain Aaron Spencer (Patrick Dempsey) in Dexter: Original Sin season 1, episode 7

Given Aaron Spencer’s villain twist and Dexter Morgan’s own hiring in Dexter: Original Sin, it’s clear that Miami Metro needs a better screening process when bringing people onto their team. In addition to Aaron Spencer being a child kidnapper and killer, Dexter Morgan is the illusive Bay Harbor Butcher, Harry Morgan essentially creates a vigilante serial killer, Stan Liddy is a corrupt officer in the narcotics division, and there are doubtlessly other Miami Metro employees over the years who have turned out to be criminals themselves. With this history, it’s hard not to be suspicious of every Miami Metro employee.
