Dexter: Original Sin Has A Great Opportunity To Fix One Of The Most Overlooked Plot Holes From The Original Show

The Dexter prequel series all eight seasons of Dexter. For a show as well written as Dexter was, it's almost unheard of for a plot hole to be completely overlooked like that. It also concerns a central part of Dexter's killing ritual, so as minor as it may seem, it has massive implications on his ability to evade the police.

Even though Dexter ignored this plot hole for years, Original Sin is going to have to address it soon. Because of solving Dexter: New Blood's M99 vs. ketamine debate to explaining why he started showing his victims photos of their victims. Now, Original Sin has a chance to address one of the longest-running and most overlooked plot holes in the franchise's history, and it could solve it so thoroughly that it will be like there was never a plot hole at all.

Dexter Shouldn’t Be Able To Afford A Boat On A Forensic Tech’s Salary In The Main Series

Dexter Would Have Had To Save For Years To Buy The Slice Of Life

One of the most important tools in Dexter's killing arsenal was his boat, the Slice of Life. He used it to dispose of bodies, as a cover for his normal life, and to ride into the storm at the ending of Dexter. The problem is, Dexter shouldn't be able to afford a 29-foot boat on a forensic technician's salary. Dexter described the Slice of Life as a 2001 Century 2901 center console while trying to sell it in Dexter season 8, episode 11. Even used, that boat costs $80,000 today, while the average salary of a forensic tech in Florida is $62,000 before taxes.

Dexter couldn't have inherited the Slice of Life from Harry Morgan in the original show, as his adoptive father died before the model of boat was even made. Original Sin also implied that Harry didn't own a boat while he was alive.

Even after adjusting for inflation, Dexter's boat would have cost more than he made in a year. That's also not taking into dock fees and general maintenance and fuel costs for the boat, plus all the upgrades and modifications he made to it. Sure, he could have saved up for years to buy it, but he also had a very expensive and well-furnished apartment in Bay Harbor that must have sucked up those savings. On top of that, Dexter was spending hundreds of dollars a month on plastic sheeting, trash bags, and M99, and he constantly left work to kill people.

The Ending Of Original Sin Episode 6 Means Dexter Needs A New Way To Dump Bodies

The original Dexter was never very concerned with explaining how Dexter financed his life as a serial killer. ittedly, it is a bit pedantic to criticize his finances, but Dexter: Original Sin has made the problem worse right before it has to solve it. The only way Dexter could have afforded the Slice of Life was by saving for years, but after the ending of Original Sin episode 6, it looks like Dexter's about to get his boat almost as soon as he starts killing. The police found Dexter's dumping spot in the Everglades, and he'll need a new way to get rid of bodies now.

Giving Dexter his boat would be the easiest way to solve his body disposal problem, but Original Sin made that harder to do. As Tanya Martin (Sarah Michelle Gellar) explained in the premiere of Original Sin, Dexter is only making $4.25 an hour at Miami Metro. If it was a stretch to say he could afford the Slice of Life in Dexter, he certainly can't afford it in Original Sin. One major hint suggests that the prequel show is going to give Dexter his boat anyway, but that same detail also set up the perfect way to solve the plot hole in Dexter's finances.

Camilla's Role In Dexter: Original Sin Could Finally Fix The Show's Boat Plot Hole

Camilla Offered Dexter A Ride On Her Boat & She Could Sell It To Dexter Cheaply

In Dexter: Original Sin episode 6, Camilla Figg (Sarah Kinsey) offered to let Dexter take her boat out for a pleasure cruise. That in itself is a hint that Original Sin is about to show how Dexter started disposing of bodies at sea, but it also presents the perfect opportunity to solve Dexter's financial plot hole. Camilla's husband, Gene, dies at some point between Original Sin and Dexter, and Camilla might be willing to sell her boat to Dexter after her husband's ing. Camilla's clearly fond of Dexter, and if she doesn't have Gene to use the boat with, she may be willing to sell it cheaply.

If Dexter is able to buy the Slice of Life for a very cheap price from Camilla, his financial plot hole would essentially disappear. Dock, fuel, and maintenance prices are high, but well within the budget of a forensic tech, especially if Harry Morgan left some money behind in his will. After 19 years, Dexter may have finally found a way to explain an overlooked plot hole in Dexter's lavish lifestyle, and it's all because of one of the most overlooked characters in the franchise. As unlikely as it seems, Camilla Figg could single-handedly solve Dexter: Original Sin's boat problem.
