highly underrated British crime show that many American viewers may have never heard of, Death in Paradise brings the grit and deadpan comedy of British mystery shows to the tropical locale of Saint Marie, a fictional Caribbean island and a British Overseas Territory. Death in Paradise is filmed on the French Caribbean island of Guadeloupe and the setting of the series, which first premiered in 2011, is a key aspect of the show's success. A major part of the show and a source of comedy is the fish-out-of-water aspects of the London-bred officers arriving in the relaxed and sunny Saint Marie. The big news for Death in Paradise season 14 is that viewers will be getting a new lead of the series. Each DI in the show has stuck around for about three seasons, making the introduction of a new one a major event in the show. In May 2024, Don Gilet was announced as the new lead of Death in Paradise, set to play DI Mervin Wilson beginning with the season's Christmas special. Many fans will recognize Gilet from his role as Lucas Johnson in EastEnders. Gilet said about the casting,
"Being offered the new lead role in Death in Paradise feels like a deeply loved and incredibly precious jewel has been placed in my hands. This is a big show, with a big heart and the love continually grows for it. It is my intention to never lose sight of that and to remain grateful, humbled and dedicated."
Clearly, Gilet is aware of how important his character is to the legacy of the show and won't be taking the part lightly. Executive producer Tim Key said about the casting,

There seem to be big plans for Mervin and Gilet is obviously up for it.
