He’s Marvel’s resident roastmaster, to the point where he stole the Infinity Gauntlet from Thanos just to use it to roast the Marvel Universe. Neither heroes nor villains are safe from his onslaught of jokes whenever he’s ready to fire off rounds of jokes - except for one real-world celebrity.

One of the few people safe from Deadpool’s wisecracks is Oscar-nominated actor Bill Murray, as pointed out in Pooluminati #1 by Zac Gorman and Todd Nauck. Even if the opportunity presents itself, Wade Wilson makes it painfully clear that under no circumstances will he ever roast Bill Murray.

It's especially funny to see that Deadpool has such an opportunity to roast Murray, considering that the actor is currently a part of the MCU cast. However, Deadpool has far more targets onscreen and on- that he’s willing to roast before he'll ever step into Murray territory.

In Pooluminati #1, Wade and the new Deadpool, his daughter Ellie, have just completed their latest hit job together, one that Wade has her record for their sizzle reel. The daddy-daughter directorial debut warrants a mention of Francis Ford Coppola’s daughter, Sofia, who previously directed Bill Murray in Lost in Translation. Upon Ellie mentioning that Sofia never needed to hold together a rotting corpse, Wade refuses out loud the opportunity to make fun of Murray. “The man was in Ghostbusters,” Deadpool defends himself.

Pooluminati #1 also features a back-up story at the end of the book called “The Li’l Daughters of Deadpool” by Alexis Quasarano, Enid Balam, Ian Herring, and Joe Sabino.

Thanks to a career in comedy spanning fifty-two years, the Saturday Night Live alum is a rare celebrity who seems to be universally loved by the masses. His longevity in Hollywood has earned him respect from the public and his consistency in classics like Ghostbusters has earned him fans like Deadpool who won’t hesitate to recognize his achievements. Murray’s cameo in Zombieland is essentially dedicated to addressing how many fans worldwide adore the comedian, and from one roaster to another, Deadpool can’t help but ire the contributions of the former "Weekend Update" host.

Ryan Reynolds Remains a Target of Deadpool in Movies and Comics

Although Deadpool refuses to crack a joke in Murray’s direction, that doesn’t mean that celebs in general are safe from his tirade of insults. One celebrity is perhaps the biggest target of Deadpool’s arsenal of humor. That celeb is none other than the actor who plays Deadpool for the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Ryan Reynolds. In both the movies and the comics, Deadpool is depicted as outright hating the Proposal actor. Many will interpret that level of hatred as merely self-referential, given that Deadpool is Reynolds to many readers.

Once Reynolds eventually did take on the role off the recommendation from a studio exec who saw Blade: Trinity, creative teams only got more aggressive with writing Deadpool’s stance on Reynolds.

In some regards, that’s exactly the reason for much of Deadpool’s meta humor. However, Deadpool’s ire for the Canadian began a decade before Reynolds played him. As far back as 2004, Deadpool has been taking indirect jabs at Reynolds, most notably referring to himself as Reynolds mixed with a Shar-Pei puppy in Cable and Deadpool #2 by Fabian Nicieza and Mark Brooks. Once Reynolds eventually did take on the role off the recommendation from a studio exec who saw Blade: Trinity, creative teams only got more aggressive with writing Deadpool’s stance on Reynolds. From there, the jabs became even more direct and a lot more vicious.

The examples of people who get the brunt of Deadpool’s savagery make for an extensive list, but no one makes for a bigger punching bag than Reynolds. Deadpool is always making self-aware fourth wall jokes, but the jokes that audiences seem to find the funniest are those referencing Reynolds and his filmography. It’s an ittedly easy joke to make when Reynolds is playing Deadpool, especially onscreen where the Vancouver native is poking fun at himself, but they resonate strongly enough to justify continuing to make them rather than having Deadpool move to another target - much less Bill Murray.

Beginning in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, Bill Murray ed the MCU as Krylar in 2023. The following year, after sharing the Marvel FOX Universe with the X-Men franchise, Wade Wilson finally ed the MCU himself, starting with Deadpool and Wolverine. Marvel has the opportunity to take Deadpool’s idolization of Murray to another level by having the two meet onscreen. He may not necessarily target Murray as a butt of a joke, but fans could certainly find entertainment from watching Deadpool fawn over his favorite actor.

Whether the two meet onscreen or not, the moment in Pooluminati shows that Deadpool’s meta taste in humor doesn’t necessarily always have to be scathing and brutal. Sometimes, a Deadpool joke can be a loving tribute and still be just as funny. Whether he’s joking about SNL or an ex-SNL member like Murray, the creators are able to take opportunities to pay homage. As frequently as Deadpool disrespects others, watching him show respect to icons, even briefly, proves just as memorable.
