Milestone Media’s mission is to boost the visibility of underrepresented voices in the comics industry. Beginning in 1993 as an imprint of DC Comics, Milestone’s characters have grown beyond the comics; likes of the Blood Syndicate and Xombi. Recently, the imprint launched the Milestone Initiative, dedicated to discovering and fostering diverse talent. This Initiative demonstrates Milestone's commitment to their original mission, and its new Milestones in History continues to demonstrate this dedication to diversity.
A press release on introduced by a Milestone hero; the stories are written and illustrated by creators from in and outside of the comics field, including Alice Randall, Amy Chu, Tananarive Due, Jamal Igle and Arvell Jones. Not content to merely look back, Milestones in History also looks forward; in the story “Things to Come,” readers will be treated to an exciting glimpse at the future of the Milestone Universe.
Since 1993, Milestone Media has been at the forefront of diversity in American comic books, both in of characters and creators. The company’s initial offerings were unlike anything else on the stands at the time, showcasing Black and other characters of color in ways sorely lacking in mainstream superhero comics. Since Milestone’s return last year, they have renewed their commitment to spotlighting diversity by not only re energizing their signature characters for a new generation, but by also sponsoring programs such as the Milestone Initiative. With Milestones in History, the company is shining a light on prominent Black artists, scientists and activists, names that often get excluded from mainstream discourse. The talent assembled come from not only the comics field, but from outside as well, reinforcing the commitment to diversity and inclusion.
Milestones in History perfectly encapsulates Milestone’s mission to foster diversity in comics. It looks back at the history of the Black experience, showcasing the giants on whose shoulders Milestone stands, while looking forward to the company’s future as well.
Milestones in History will release on June 21st, 2022.
