James Gunn debunks speculation about Wonder Woman star Gal Gadot having been let go from the DC Universe. Despite having been in the development stages for roughly two years, Wonder Woman 3 was recently revealed to no longer be moving forward. Patty Jenkins, who helmed the first two films, had submitted a Wonder Woman 3 treatment to Warner Bros. Pictures, but due to the new DC Studios regime, her pitch didn't fit into their DCU vision. While there were reports floating around about a supposed fallout between the parties, Jenkins came out with a statement to help clarify the situation.
Even though Wonder Woman 3 may, as of right now, not be happening, there has been confusion about Gadot's future with the DCU. Henry Cavill being out as Superman has suggested that some type of reboot is on its way for the DCU, which began in 2013, but there have been rumors and speculations that because Wonder Woman 3 was shelved, Gadot had been fired from the DCU. A fan recently took to Instagram and stated to Gunn that they "Cannot wait to see what you're cooking up... That being said, the move to boot Cavill and Gadot (especially after they'd announced their return) doesn't inspire confidence." Gunn fired back by denying the theory that Gadot had been fired from the franchise, stating the following:
How Gal Gadot Can Continue In The DCU Despite No Wonder Woman 3
Even though Wonder Woman 3, in its latest form, is not happening under DC Studios, that doesn't mean the threequel couldn't be redeveloped later on. The only significant difference is that, as of right now, Jenkins won't be involved in any capacity. What is unclear is if Gunn meant that Gadot never got fired and is still with DC Studios or that she parted ways from them rather than got the boot. Thus far, Gadot hasn't made any statements whatsoever after the news about Wonder Woman 3 broke in the press.
If Wonder Woman 3 doesn't get resurrected, it doesn't have to mean the end of Gadot's time in the DCU. While the new Superman movie will focus on a younger Clark Kent, Gunn has never stated if this is a full-on reboot for the franchise. Some speculate that the DCU is starting over, including because Jason Momoa's Aquaman franchise is reportedly not moving forward after his 2023 sequel. With Momoa reportedly being eyed to play a different DCU character, it may be more about doing a soft reboot as opposed to starting over from scratch. If Gunn sees Gadot's Wonder Woman fitting into his new DCU, there is no reason why she couldn't reprise the role.
The only significant difference is that it would likely be a version of Diana Prince with an altered backstory compared to the DCU iteration. Even if they were to cast a new Wonder Woman, Gadot could get the Momoa treatment and portray a different DCU player, which has been extended to Cavill too, as he met with Gunn for other future plans. Since they have a DCU strategy in place, that might mean more clarity in 2023, especially to avoid additional false reports and rumors coming out. As the DCU goes in a new direction, time will tell what happens to Gadot as Wonder Woman and if she has a place in the franchise or not.
