Mark Waid is Breaking the DC Universe with "We Are Yesterday"
New DC Crossover is Tears Holes in Different Eras of History
DC Comics is getting ready for an epic crossover that's going to bridge two series set in two different eras of DC history. "We Are Yesterday" will unite the past of Batman/Superman: World's Finest with the modern-day adventures of Justice League Unlimited. The crossover builds on the latter series' recent reveal that the Justice League's latest team of villains, Inferno, is actually a time-displaced version of the Legion of Doom, who have returned to destroy the Justice League once and for all.
...there will also be long-term ramifications because of the paradoxes caused by the Legion of Doom...
Spearheading this crossover is Mark Waid, writer of both Batman/Superman: World's Finest and Justice League Unlimited. Waid spoke with Popverse to discuss the event and key fans in on just how serious this crossover is when it comes to the DC Universes heroes. Waid points out that this is going to affect both the Dark Knight and the Man of Steel in the short term, but there will also be long-term ramifications because of the paradoxes caused by the Legion of Doom and the Darkseid energy left behind during his attack on the DCU.
Don't forget to brush up on Darkseid's attack during the DC All In Special #1!
Waid makes it clear that the Legion of Doom’s time travel is going to be a tipping point and that there will be fallout all across the various eras of DC history. He says that the DC Universe’s timestream as a whole is breaking and that what the Legion has planned is only making things worse. In his most ominous statement, Waid says that everything in the DCU is moot, because “everything has fallen apart” throughout time and space.
DC's Timeline is Falling Apart, But It's Going to Come Back Together Stronger
New History of the DC Universe Will Pick Up the Pieces of "We Are Yesterday"
"We Are Yesterday" hasn't begun just yet, but it's incredibly close and, by all s, it sounds like it's going to be a wild affair. Gorilla Grodd is more powerful than ever, and he's leading one of the most sinister incarnations of the Legion of Doom in some time. That'd be bad enough if it weren't for the fact that Prime DC Universe wasn't still fragile from Darkseid's energy creating anomalies that the League is still investigating. But DC Comics isn’t breaking the timeline down for fun, it’s allowing the publisher to clean history up a bit.
DC fans may already be familiar with the recently-announced miniseries, New History of the DC Universe. This new four-issue miniseries will re-tell DC history from the perspective of the biggest comic book diehard of them all, Barry Allen. Starting with the Golden Age all the way up to today, DC Comics is going to take fans on a that spans decades to give them the clearest and most fulfilling look at DC's timeline in years. It’s a big endeavor, but DC Comics has a real pro behind it all.
...if anyone can make sense of DC’s incredibly complicated timeline, it’d be Waid.
It comes as no surprise that New History of the DC Universe is written by Mark Waid, the mind behind the “We Are Yesterday” event. The good thing is that no matter what changes come from the crossover event, Waid is one of the best people to put things right again. He’s possibly one of the best DC historians to ever live, so if anyone can make sense of DC’s incredibly complicated timeline, it’d be Waid. Time may be about to shatter, but the DC Universe will be safe in Waid’s capable hands.
DC Comics is Going to Create Order from Chaos with Series.
No Matter What Happens, Continuity is Being Cleaned Up
A universe with as much history as the DC Universe is bound to get tangled up periodically. But “We Are Yesterday” presents a wonderful opportunity for DC Comics to clear things up. Time may be unraveling, but the writer breaking it also knows DC history like the back of his hand. Whatever comes next for the Justice League, Waid will undoubtedly give readers an overhauled timeline that should satisfy any DC Comics fan.
"We Are Yesterday" begins with Batman/Superman: World's Finest #38, available April 16th from DC Comics.
