DC Comics has announced its next initiative, Future State which promises to be the biggest shakeup in its comic book history. One of the biggest two comic book publishers in the world, DC has a proud history of daring to adjust the status quo. This is usually achieved through cosmic stories like Crisis on Infinite Earths, which result in creative relaunches for their biggest titles.
Right now, DC is going through one of its biggest events to date. Dark Nights: Death Metal has seen Earth absorbed into the Dark Multiverse, and the Justice League are desperately attempting to rewrite history and undo the damage that has been done to the Earth. While it's safe to say they will be successful, that doesn't mean there won't be consequences. Now, DC has announced what comes after Dark Nights: Death Metal - and it promises to be the biggest shakeup comic book readers have ever seen. Although the Multiverse will be saved, the outcome of Dark Nights: Death Metal will shake loose the fabric of time and space, with dramatic consequences.
In January 2021, Jonathan Kent serving as his successor. The Justice League is in chaos, with Barry Allen cut off from the Speed Force, John Stewart and the remaining Green Lanterns stranded in the shadow of a depleted power battery, and Black Adam looking to the past to find a way to save the Multiverse itself.
Future State is possibly the boldest, most exciting comic book initiative in decades. The concept is reminiscent of Marvel's Age of Apocalypse, which replaced the entire X-Men line back in 1995 in order to introduce a twisted, horrific "What If?" reality. But the scale of Future State is even greater, because it looks to affect every single book in the entire DC line. It's unclear whether all the books are set in the same continuity, or whether these are different timelines intersecting and crossing over into one another; it all depends just how severely the Multiverse is damaged in the wake of Dark Nights: Death Metal.
"The DC Universe has always been fertile ground for new and refreshing takes on our characters, and DC Future State definitely contributes to this legacy," said DC Executive Editor Marie Javins. "When the event begins in January, some savvy readers will not only pick up on some of the breadcrumbs that have already been tossed out in our current titles, but they will also find new hints and clues of what’s to come in 2021." DC has recruited an elite team, including established writers such as Mariko Tamaki, Brian Michael Bendis, Gene Luen Yang, Joëlle Jones, and John Timms, as well as new voices such as John Ridley (12 Years A Slave), Brandon Vietti (Young Justice), Meghan Fitzmartin (Supernatural, DC Super Hero Girls), Brandon Easton (Thundercats, Transformers: War for Cybertron), Alitha Martinez (REPRESENT! It’s A Bird!), L.L. McKinney (Nubia: Real One), Paula Sevenbergen (Stargirl) and Siya Oum (Lola XOXO). With such skilled writers at the helm, this event is sure to be unmissable.
