Warning! Spoilers ahead for The Human Target #10!It looks like a Green Lantern ring actually managed to find its way onto the finger of the galactic despot Darkseid. The Human Target #10 reveals the ridiculous circumstances that led the New God to getting his own Power Ring.
The Green Lantern Corps was founded by the Guardians of the Universe for one purpose: To keep the DC Universe safe from threats that want nothing else than to bring harm to it. While the Corps has indeed kept some of the worst of the worst at bay, the organization's power isn't enough to deal with the terrifying New God Darkseid. In his bid to bend all reality to his will, Darkseid has launched thousands of assaults all across the universe. Thankfully, the Corps has the heroes of the Justice League to help stop the powerful dictator. Without them, the Green Lanterns may not have a chance at fighting back.
Especially because one of their own seems to have actually helped Darkseid by directly giving him a Power Ring of his very own. In The Human Target #10 by Tom King and Greg Smallwood, Christopher Chance is working his case with Green Lantern G’nort, a former member of Justice League International. Convinced that Guy Gardner is actually alive after Chance supposedly murdered him, the two make a trip to Oa so Christopher can have a look at Gardner’s personnel files. After confirming that Guy isn’t dead, the two head back to Earth to seek the Lantern out. All the while, Chance gets an earful from G'nort about his time in the Corps. While the two take a brief trip to a pharmacy, G'nort mentions that he's previously gotten in trouble for giving his ring to Darkseid because "...he said it'd be good, but it wasn't".
Darkseid Exploited The Green Lanterns' Greatest Weakness
While readers don’t get to see Darkseid with a ring or the undoubtedly terrifying situation it caused, one doesn’t have to imagine how bad Darkseid getting a Power Ring would be. The recounting from G’nort really makes one wonder how he got into a predicament like that, what managed to convince him to give Darkseid his ring, and why the Corps didn’t punish G’nort beyond mere probation. It also shows how smart Darkseid is by exploiting the trusting nature of the Corps’ most affable Green Lantern.
The officers of the Green Lantern Corps all share one thing in common: They all have the ability to overcome great fear. However, not every Green Lantern is as capable a warrior as the ones found on Earth. While Darkseid could theoretically pool all his forces to attack one Green Lantern in the name of taking their ring, it’s a far easier task to simply fool someone like G’nort. His laidback sensibilities often gets him into trouble, so it’s not much of a stretch to think Darkseid would have easily taken the Lantern’s ring. Readers curious to discover what became of Green Lantern G’nort in the years after the Darkseid incident can see him in The Human Target #10, on sale now.
