Summary
- VFX artists had mixed reviews on the snow scene in Dark Matter, praising the rendering of the snow but critiquing the fluffy appearance.
- Season 2 of Dark Matter will introduce more challenging VFX with new and existing universes explored by the characters.
- Characters in Dark Matter may have to spend more time in stranger universes in season 2 due to unpredictable dangers.
When analyzing the VFX in Dark Matter's universe where a post-apocalyptic Chicago is consumed by snow, Corridor Crew had mixed reactions to the visual effects.
They highlighted that the snow's "rendering is incredible, it's very well done. The clumpiness and the animation work very nicely, but it looks way too fluffy and lightweight." As impressive as the snow looked, the characters' movements through the snow were arguably too fluid, as they emphasized that "if snow was up to your chest, even if it's fresh powder, you wouldn't just be able to walk through it."
Dark Matter Season 2 Will Present More VFX Challenges
More Universes Will Be Shown In Season 2
Dark Matter season 2 has been officially renewed by Apple TV+ and will continue the exploration of the multiverse. Jason, his wife, Daniela (Jennifer Connelly), and their son, Charlie (Oakes Fegley), have left their universe and settled in a new one. Amanda Lucas (Alice Braga) was surprisingly found by Ryan Holder (Jimmi Simpson) in the universe she chose for herself. With these universes needing to return in season 2, and new universes inevitably being introduced, additional and sometimes challenging VFX will be needed to bring all the universes to life.
Depending on how Dark Matter season 2's story unfolds, more time could be spent in stranger universes now that Jason and his family have left their original universe behind.
With season 2 going beyond the source material, the universes where the characters spend the most time in season 2 remains to be seen. In season 1, most of the universes were visually similar to the real world, with the main differences being the alternate versions of the characters who lived there and not the environments themselves. Jason had no reason to spend substantial time in the apocalyptic universes given their dangers and that they were not his home universe.

10 Best TV Shows Like Apple TV+'s Dark Matter
Apple TV+'s mind-bending Dark Matter season 1 has ended, but there are other science-fiction series that are similar in of themes and scope.
Depending on how Dark Matter season 2's story unfolds, more time could be spent in stranger universes now that Jason and his family have left their original universe behind. Even if they do not want to continue moving between universes, they may have no choice given the unpredictable dangers of Dark Matter's multiverse. Dark Matter season 2 will continue to expand the scope of the multiverse with VFX that will be impressive, but also challenging at times.
