Warning! Spoilers ahead for Daredevil #15!I hate to say it, but it looks like Daredevil's closest friend has become a brand-new enemy, complete with the power to destroy the Man Without Fear. The last year of Matt Murdock's life has been complicated, to say the least, as his friends and foes alike have become corrupted by Daredevil's personal demons.
After being put through literal Hell, the Seven Deadly Sins, came to Earth and started possessing people in Matt's life. Now it looks like one has taken control of the person Daredevil loves more than anything.
I'm Calling It: Daredevil's Best Friend Has Been Possessed
One of Daredevil's Sins Has Claimed Foggy Nelson
In Daredevil #15 by Saladin Ahmed, Luigi Zagaria, Jesus Aburtov, and Clayton Cowles, both of Hell's Kitchen's Daredevils investigate the death of a P.I. killed by a sin that has been pursuing Matt. Matt beats himself up, saying that the awful things the Seven Deadly Sins are his punishment for fleeing Hell, but Elektra reminds Matt that he doesn't embody any of the Sins that have been after him. Elsewhere in Hell’s Kitchen, a young man named Rizzy, intending to sue Father Matt, meets with an obscured lawyer, who informs Rizzy that Daredevil won’t be a problem for long.
Matt's latest adventure begins in Daredevil #1 (2023)!
Daredevil meets with Father Javi to discuss a boy that's been kidnapped from Javi and Matt's group home. During their meeting, Matt confesses his recent crisis of faith regarding the Seven Deadly Sins, though Javi helps Daredevil see that it isn't God behind the demons' attack on Hell's Kitchen. The conversation is cut short as a freshly-murdered body appears on the city's streets and Daredevil immediately begins tracking the monster that did it. Daredevil determines the demon to be the sin of Wrath and fights it atop a building before it effortlessly defeats Matt.
Someone knocks on Matt's door and, to his horror, he doesn't detect a heartbeat from the visitor.
Matt wakes up the next morning in a hotel room, unsure of how he got there or, even more unsettling, who has removed his costume and cleaned it for him. Someone knocks on Matt's door and, to his horror, he doesn't detect a heartbeat from the visitor. Matt answers the door and doesn't find anything other than a letter waiting for him. But to Daredevil's surprise, the letter is actually a legal summons from the law firm of Nelson & North, Foggy Nelson's new practice.
How the Seven Deadly Sins Came After Daredevil
Who Has Been Infected by Matt Murdock's Demons?
This harrowing chapter in Matt Murdock's life began when he embarked on a crusade to destroy the Hand for good. Unfortunately, Daredevil failed in his mission and numerous souls, including Foggy's, were taken to Hell. Matt traveled to the underworld to free the condemned souls, where he battled the Hand's avatar, the Beast and its sister, the Wild. Though it appeared Daredevil perished in the fires of Hell, he made it out and was given a new life by a higher power, where he began living as Father Matt, with little memories of his life as Daredevil.
Make sure to read all about Matt's recent struggles with the Hand during the "Red Fist" saga starting in Daredevil #1 (2022)!
But it wasn't long until Matt was dragged back into his old life. Elektra became possessed by the sin of Sloth and attacked Father Matt, who exorcised the demon and helped Matt regain some of his memories. Father Matt began wading back into his old life, where he discovered several of Daredevil's allies had similarly become tainted by other Sins who had corrupted pieces of his soul. Ben Urich was possessed by Envy, She-Hulk was taken by Gluttony, and Wolverine was controlled by lust (bloodlust, that is).
...several of Daredevil's allies had similarly become tainted by other Sins...
It wasn't just allies that were taken by Daredevil's sins. Greed naturally gravitated to the most obvious person in Matt's life, Wilson Fisk. Despite Fisk stepping back from running Hell's Kitchen, Greed pushed the gangster back into his old life, becoming the local Kingpin once more. Thankfully, Daredevil managed to identify Greed and helped Fisk purge the demon from his body. Fisk was so shaken by the events he'd seen, Daredevil's archenemy even swore off his life of crime and began to genuinely seek redemption.
Which of Daredevil's Worst Sins is in Control of Foggy?
I Think Foggy is Embodying Daredevil's Wrath
So far in the current Daredevil run, we've seen Daredevil exorcise five Sins: Sloth, Envy, Gluttony, Lust and Greed. That just leaves Wrath and Pride left, and this issue hints at both of them. When Rizzy meets with the lawyer (who's definitely Foggy given how the issue ends), Foggy mentions how proud Rizzy should be for stepping up and takes time to boast about how good he is in the courtroom. Later in the issue, Daredevil hunts down the demon Wrath and during the fight, he makes the suspicious remark that fighting Wrath is "as effective as fighting fog".
Wrath could have killed Daredevil during their fight, but it held back...
I've been waiting for a sin to possess Foggy since the moment we found out that the Sins were corrupting Daredevil's allies. But the question now is which one has taken Foggy under its spell? Pride seems to be the way that the comic is going (and it would be ironic, given how many times Matt's pride has stood in the way of his friendship with Foggy). But truth be told, I'm leaning more towards Foggy being under Wrath's command.
Think about how many times over the years Foggy has lost it and called it quits on his and Matt's friendship over the secrets he's kept. Hell, during their last conversation, Foggy really laid into Daredevil for hiding the fact that he was still alive to 'protect' Foggy. Plus, Wrath could have killed Daredevil during their fight, but it held back and the next thing, Daredevil woke up safe and sound with freshly laundered clothes. In my opinion, Foggy is under the control of Wrath, and he's desperately trying to get Daredevil to help him.
Daredevil Has to Face His Worst Traits to Save His Best Friend
Matt Can Only Free Foggy By Finally Dealing with His Anger
It's actually perfect that Wrath has taken Foggy. Anger has always been one of Matt's worst traits, and it has caused more damage to his relationship with Foggy than any other sin. Now the living embodiment of anger is controlling the person Matt has hurt most thanks to his wrath. I don't think Foggy's too far gone yet, but Wrath is by far the most effective and ruthless Sin we've seen yet. If Daredevil wants to save his friend, he's going to have to confront his demons once and for all.
