Captain America: Brave New World actor Danny Ramirez recently explained that he knew that Joaquin Torres/ Falcon would become an Avenger long before it was made official following the film's release. The actor first debuted as the new Falcon after Sam Wilson (Anthony Mackie) took up the mantle of Captain America in The Falcon and The Winter Soldier.
Recently, Screen Rant caught up with Ramirez, and the actor revealed that Joaquin ing the Avengers was part of the plan from the moment he was cast. He explained:
When I got the role in 2019, I was told that in the first phone call. I was told, like, "Hey, we've been traveling all over the world, and they're always asking, 'When's the first Latino Avenger coming? When's the first Latino Avenger coming?' And we're happy that we're making that call right now, and he's here."
It was the sickest call I've ever received. It was framed in that, really, it was so dramatic. When they were like, "He's here," I was like, "That's me." But that was 2019, so obviously, then we go shoot the show, there's delays that happen, and there's a couple of things in the show that would have — there just wasn't enough real estate to properly introduce Joaquin as Falcon, let alone bring him on to the squad.
So, during pre-production, [Captain America: Brave New World director Julius Onah] is like, "Yeah, let's go get lunch." And I was like, "Oh yeah, let's go and grab a bite." And in that lunch, he's like, "Hey, by the way, I want you to read this little scene right here." And I read it, and I just get so hyped, but I'm like, "Finally." And he's like, "What?" And then I explained to him this exact story, and he's like, "Oh, hell yeah."
So it was, I feel like, a long time coming, but also was incredibly exciting. I feel like I understand the MCU from the perspective of being on the wings waiting, but at the same time, I think I feel new to a lot of people that are viewing the story.
Transitioning from talking about his own reaction, Ramirez also talked about how Joaquin would feel about becoming an Avenger. Per the actor, Joaquin is "unable to and process" despite being "a really good wingman for Sam," and doing missions together "for a couple years." The actor then concluded: "We get to see one of the first few times that Joaquin is allowed to go do something, but he's obviously worn the suit. He's tested the suit out, he's probably done some courier missions."
What Danny Ramirez's Comments About Becoming An Avenger Mean
Ramirez answering the question from both his and Joaquin's perspective provides an interesting dichotomy. Despite his excitement, Ramirez believes that Joaquin had some hesitations about becoming an Avenger, explaining that his energy shifted from disappointment over his near-death experience to anticipation of becoming one of Earth's Mightiest Heroes. Likewise, the delays and secrecy dampened Ramirez's initial hype for ing the franchise.

The MCU's New Falcon Addresses Whether Joaquin Would Take Super Soldier Serum After Captain America: Brave New World Ending
Captain America: Brave New World's Danny Ramirez addresses how Joaquin Torres would react if given the opportunity to take the super soldier serum.
However, his journey to becoming the Falcon has only been this long because of the unusual production timeline of The Falcon and The Winter Soldier and Captain America: Brave New World. The former faced both the pandemic and creative retooling as obstacles, pushing its release to 2021. Likewise, the latter underwent extensive reshoots and suffered due to Hollywood strikes. Neither of these MCU projects were meant to take so long to release.
Our Take On Danny Ramirez's Comments About Becoming An Avenger
It's understandable that the anticipation of such a career-defining moment would be a lot for Ramirez. Keeping a secret of this magnitude for six years is a major commitment, especially when working for a studio like Marvel that takes any and all leaks very seriously. Nonetheless, Joaquin's time to shine as an Avenger is coming--Ramirez has been cast in Avengers: Doomsday, and that film drops next year. Based on the ending of Captain America: Brave New World, Sam and Joaquin will be rebuilding their own faction of the team, setting up a promising future for Ramirez in the MCU.
