Daggerheart, the new tabletop RPG by Actual Play shows and regular updates on the progress of the new game.
One thing that separates Daggerheart from other tabletop RPGs is that it uses cards as part of character-building. When building a character, players use cards that contain abilities related to a character's background, ancestry, class, and domains. Instead of releasing a core rulebook, Darrington Press is releasing Daggerheart as a Core Set that includes both the core rulebook and all the cards needed for character building. Darrington Press is releasing two versions of the new core set — a standard edition and a limited edition that includes an alternate cover and several other extra game tools.
What's In Daggerheart's Limited Edition Core Set?
Daggerheart's Limited Edition Includes Several Extras For The Game
Daggerheart's Limited Edition Core Set includes both the rulebook and the box of cards, plus several enhancements. Notably, Darrington Press is only planning one print run for the Limited Edition, meaning that it will never be made again after it sells out. While players don't need the Limited Edition Core Set, as most of the enhancements are standard game items, the Limited Edition Core Set is currently the only way to get a GM Screen for Daggerheart.
The Limited Edition includes the following items:
- Daggerheart Core Rulebook
- Daggerheart core card set
- GM Screen
- Dice set, including separately colored Hope and Fear Dice
- Tokens
- Character Sheet Pad
Daggerheart's Limited Edition Core Set also comes with a special cover illustrated by Dominik Mayer. Mayer's artwork can be found on the core rulebook along with the card box, GM screen, and the wraparound box used to store everything in the game. The artwork features several Daggerheart characters in heroic poses, with contrasting bright and dark colors meant to reflect the duality between hope and fear found in the game. Pre-orders for Daggerheart are available on Darrington Press's website now, with the Standard Edition selling for $59.99 and the Limited Edition for $149.99.
How To Play The Daggerheart TTRPG
Daggerheart Uses Two Twelve-Sided Dice And A Different Approach to Character-Building
Daggerheart is a high-fantasy tabletop RPG that plays out significantly differently from games like Dungeons & Dragons. While making checks, players roll two twelve-sided dice, designated as the Hope and Fear Dice. Players add the two dice together to determine their check, but the higher dice result determines whether a roll is made "with hope" or "with fear." A roll "with hope" adds positive effects to the result of the roll even on a failure, while a roll "with fear" adds negative consequences to the roll.

Brandon Sanderson's Cosmere RPG Makes One Change That D&D Could Use
A huge new Kickstarter RPG has a cool concept that would be surprisingly easy to implement into Dungeons & Dragons campaigns for fun results.
Players can use miniatures on a table to represent a combat battlefield, but ranges of abilities and attacks are more abstract. Instead of using specific distances, the game uses measurements like "very close," "close," and "far" that can be abstracted by the lengths of cards or character sheets. Players are also encouraged to use everyday items like cups or dice bags to represent buildings and other terrain on the tabletop.
One final way Daggerheart separates itself from Dungeons & Dragons is its collaborative worldbuilding. The game encourages players to have an equal role in worldbuilding along with the GM. Players are encouraged to name locations on a map, describe NPCs and locales, and even describe the enemies that they face. This adds a more improvisational element to Daggerheart but also gives the players equal ownership in the world instead of it being a creation of the GM. The game also s pre-built campaigns (called frames in the playtest) along with traditional RPG campaigns made solely by a GM.
Should You Buy The Daggerheart Limited Edition?
Daggerheart's Limited Edition Will Be A Box Set, But Players Can Use Standard Edition Too
Daggerheart is one of several high-profile new tabletop RPGs due for release in the next couple of years. Some of these games are made for more combat-minded players, while others are meant for a lighter experience than Dungeons & Dragons. Notably, Daggerheart is meant to bridge the gap between more rules-focused games like Dungeons & Dragons and more narrative-focused games like Blades in the Dark or other Powered by the Apocalypse games. If you're looking for a game that still has a robust combat system but isn't as rigid as Dungeons & Dragons, Daggerheart may be more your speed.

Must-Play Tabletop RPGs That Are “Forged In The Dark”
A selection of excellent tabletop RPGs based off the "Forged In The Dark" RPG system introduced by "Blades In The Dark," and what makes them unique.
As for the Limited Edition, it ultimately comes down to whether you enjoy quality items. The Limited Edition certainly isn't necessary to enjoy Daggerheart, but the extra items should make for a better "out of box" experience than the standard Core Set, given that it includes the GM Screen, tokens, and dice. Critical Role tends to make top-notch quality products, so if you're looking for a gorgeous box to include on your TTRPG shelf, you should consider buying the new Daggerheart limited edition core set.
