Cyberpunk 2077 has received a boost in players thanks to the excellent Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime on Netflix, but while the player boost has reinvigorated the conversation around future Cyberpunk 2077 DLC content, Adam Smasher is perhaps the character most sorely in need of exploration. The hulking menace leaves a big impression, despite how little he actually appears in the game. Cyberpunk: Edgerunners gave Adam Smasher another cameo appearance, but failed to dive into the character's motivations. A DLC for Adam Smasher (even just as part of a regular update) would be the chance to tell this Night City legend's origins, or how the walking battle tank has been doing since Edgerunners.
The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime proves now is the best time for a Cyberpunk 2077 Adam Smasher DLC. It would be a chance to show Night City in the past or possibly another city altogether. Adam Smasher is a major character in Cyberpunk and telling his story is an excuse to explore the darker, grittier side of an already harsh dystopian future. Putting players in control of an unstoppable killing machine could be an interesting contrast, and not enough games allow players to control villains besides. Imagine a full-fledged campaign, the player controls Adam Smasher as the mercenary sheds humanity by embracing a life of servitude. Each new mission for Arasaka would bring Adam Smasher one step closer to the edge. If the anime is capable of telling stories that don't involve Johnny or V, then Cyberpunk 2077 should embrace its tabletop roots and tell different stories.
Cyberpunk 2077's Adam Smasher has gotten mods after gaining infamy as a merciless cyborg who enjoys torturing and killing anyone who gets in the way. Long before Smasher was a whispered name in Night City, Adam was just another thug for a local gang. The gang got wiped out in a raid leaving Adam Smasher as the only survivor. He later ed the army, deploying cruel tactics during combat, ultimately forcing superiors to discharge him before things got out of hand. Afterward, Smasher became a mercenary taking any contract to fuel a life of criminal excess.
An Adam Smasher Cyberpunk 2077 DLC Could Show The Cyborg's Origins
Like all Edgerunners, Adam Smasher's run came to a violent end when a rocket took out most of his body. On the verge of death, Cyberpunk 2077's most powerful corporation, Arasaka, appeared before Smasher and offered the warrior a deal: become a cyborg in an experimental augmentation process and work for the megacorp, or die. Smasher agreed and was filled with the latest technology, transforming into Arasaka's pet cyborg and shedding all traces of humanity - not that he had much love for the species in the first place. For a character this complex who takes part in so many pivotal moments throughout Cyberpunk's timeline, it seems like a waste to leave so many unanswered questions about Adam Smasher's past.
The Cyberpunk: Edgerunners anime takes place one year before the events of Cyberpunk 2077, so if a related DLC decided Adam Smasher survives the fight against V, Smasher may be still out there, deadlier than ever. Another DLC could involve telling Adam Smasher's origins, starting from his humble beginnings and following the thread until Smasher becomes a cyborg. It could even lead up to the fight against Johnny Silverhand, letting players see the scene play out from Adam Smasher's point of view. It could also be a chance to see inside Arasaka Tower, allowing players access to off-limit areas for entry-level executives. Adam Smasher works for Arasaka exclusively and no one knows how many black ops missions Smasher has completed maintaining the company's power.
The revival of Cyberpunk 2077's popularity shows that fans are craving more than Cyberpunk 2077's only planned expansion Phantom Liberty. Cyberpunk 2077 allowed players to explore Night City, while Cyberpunk: Edgerunners ground it down to its essence; it can't be over yet.
