Even a few years after release, Cult of the Lamb continued to shine as one of the most popular roguelikes in recent years, thanks to several free and expansive content updates to enjoy. Offering an excellent blend of adorable visuals contrasted by darker player choices that heavily lean into the cult elements of the game, it's easy to see why Cult of the Lamb became such a smashing success. On top of its charming art style, the gameplay for Cult of the Lamb only got better with each update, adding more depth and difficulty to the satisfying rogue-like experience.
Although the cult-building indie game might have lost some steam since its last major update almost a year ago, the Lamb's journey is still far from over. While the latest announcement about the future of the game might seem bleak at first, it promises that more content is still on the way for the beloved indie game. From developer updates to even teaser animations hinting at the direction of future DLC, there's still plenty of reason to be excited about the future of the series, despite the momentary setback.
There Won't Be Any More Free Updates For Cult Of The Lamb
A Disappointing Announcement With A Silver Lining
After releasing its last major content update with the free Unholy Alliance expansion, Cult of the Lamb has been on somewhat of a hiatus ever since, with little in the way of official announcements regarding future updates. Despite the lack of major updates, Massive Monster released several hints and even an animated short teasing its next update. While it seemed like it would just be a little longer until the next major drop, a recent post on both the official Cult of the Lamb TikTok and X s has confirmed there won't be a fourth free expansion for the game.
In the announcement itself, Cult of the Lamb's developers made it clear that Unholy Alliance would stand as the final free update for the game, stating that while "there is no update, it's something better". Although we do have some idea that the next Cult of the Lamb addition will introduce a new frozen wasteland to explore thanks to its previous teaser, nothing else has been confirmed. Thankfully, there's no shortage of fantastic rogue-like and similarly styled indie games to play while you wait for more Cult of the Lamb content.
Each Cult Of The Lamb Update Added Major Overhauls To The Game
Offering Even More Replayabilty At No Extra Cost
Cult Of The Lamb didn't provide a genre-shattering gameplay experience by any means, but its adorable artful style and unique cult-building mechanics helped the fun rogue-like experience shine even more. On top of the already fantastic base game, the several free updates to Cult of the Lamb made the game worth coming back to over the years, especially with its story expansion and new rituals to enact as a part of the Sins of the Flesh update.
Each of the three expansions to Cult of the Lamb was something I would only expect to see in a paid DLC for a smaller indie title.
On top of simple updates that streamlined the experience or added little bits of content, each of the three expansions to Cult of the Lamb was something I would only expect to see in a paid DLC for a smaller indie title. The most exciting of these updates by far was the Unholy Alliance expansion for Cult of the Lamb, which shockingly introduced local co-op into the single-player-only experience. While it's understandably disappointing for fans who were under the assumption that the next update would be released soon and without a price tag, the change has one major benefit.
The Next Cult Of The Lamb Update Will Be Its Biggest Yet
The Beloved Cult-Themed Roguelike Isn't Going Away Anytime Soon
Even if there won't be any more free updates for Cult of the Lamb, that just means whatever is coming next is big enough to warrant its very own paid DLC, or even a full-blown sequel if we're lucky enough. After three major expansions that were well worth the original asking price, it's more than understandable that Culf of the Lamb's developers would want to start charging for their work once more.
Whatever is coming next is big enough to warrant its very own paid DLC, or even a full-blown sequel if we're lucky enough.
The most exciting aspect of the vague announcement is the potential scale that a DLC or sequel could provide, especially given how long the next update has been in development for when compared to the gap between previous content drops. Thankfully, if the Cult of the Lamb comic book series is anything to go by, there's still plenty of room for the mythology of the series to be explored in future DLC while introducing exciting new cult-based mechanics to experiment with.
