Creature Commandos is available to start watching now, but before checking out the DCU 's first new show, be aware that it is not intended for all ages. James Gunn is a great storyteller who has had a hand in creating some of the most iconic movies and shows over the last decade within the superhero space. While Gunn's first big success in this space came with the reasonably family-friendly Guardians of the Galaxy movies, that is not the case when it comes to Gunn's DC projects. Under the DCEU banner, Gunn wrote and directed The Suicide Squad, an ultra violent, laugh-out loud film that did not hold back when it comes to featuring adult content.
The same goes for his spin-off show, Peacemaker, starring John Cena, which was equally bloody and intended for mature audiences. And now, with the major overhaul of the DCEU into the DCU, Gunn has been put in the hot seat to lead the new venture, and in that capacity, he has personally tackled the first big projects for the DCU, Creature Commandos, an animated show, and Superman, a live-action feature film, but as of right now, Superman looks to be a lot more family friendly than the animated TV show.
Creature Commandos Is Rated TV-MA
Meaning The Show Is Aimed At Mature Audiences
Despite being an animated show, Creature Commandos is in no way intended for younger viewers. The show received a TV-MA rating, which means mature. And when it says mature, it means adults, not teenagers, not children, but adults. The TV-MA rating is essentially the equivalent of an R rating by TV standards, and as would be expected in an R-rated film, Creature Commandos is full of the kind of content that would typically be restricted to access from younger audiences by way of checking ID. However, in a home setting, on a streaming service, it's usually available on any profile that is not set up for kids.

DC's Changes To Creature Commandos' Comics Origin & Characters Explained
The DCU's Creature Commandos have arrived, albeit with some pretty big differences between this new task force and the team from the original comics.
So, while it may be colorful, bright, and cartoony in nature, like the Saturday morning cartoons that every kid grew up watching in the 2000s and earlier, this is not a kid's cartoon. Instead, it is more in line with adult animated shows like Rick and Morty, Family Guy, and anime shows that have been designed with adults in mind. Of course, the content varies from episode to episode, but in general, the themes, content, and explicit nature of the show is a clear indication that younger viewers should steer clear, and the show be viewed as it was intended, by adults only.
Creature Commandos Contains Sex Scenes (And Potentially Necrophilia)
Creature Commandos Does Not Hold Back With Romantic Scenes
In of what Creature Commandos actually shows, there is the inclusion of sex scenes early on. Yes, it is animated, but regardless, the scenes are explicit, featuring partners undressing, getting hot and heavy, and engaging in intimate acts. Even when this is not seen on the screen, the noises are very clear and present, making it clear that what is happening is explicit in nature. Often, these scenes play out in a comical way, but the comedy is far more likely to land with a mature audience, rather than children who may be inclined to start asking questions.
And beyond the simple sexual acts which are present and play out among consenting human partners, there are also episodes that break from tradition and feature non-traditional acts. After all, the characters involved in the series are monsters, including a fish woman, the Bride of Frankenstein, a robot, and a weasel just to highlight a few. Apparently, despite lacking core aspects of humanity, these creatures do possess urges that lead to acts that could be viewed as offensive. Again, for a mature audience, this is likely to land as intended, but inquiring minds may not be ready for the things that play out on screen.
Creature Commandos Has A Lot Of Blood And Violence
Gore, War And More Galore In DCU's Premiere New Show
Even more prominent than the promiscuous anti-heroes is the presence of intense blood and guts violence. One character, from the first episode, highlights his ion for killing Nazis. This evidently leads to plenty of scenes down the line that build on this declaration. The show features intense, bloody, gory battles between humans, monsters, and creatures of all kinds. In the process, there is a lot of death and a lot of visuals highlighting the violent and intense nature of these environments. In of comparison, it is similar in nature to The Suicide Squad, which had similar visuals.

Who is your favorite character from DC's Creature Commandos so far?
The first project of James Gunn's DC Universe has arrived. After two episodes of Creature Commandos, I have already started to like some characters more than others, though that should change over the season, as each episode is supposed to focus on a member of the team. So far, Frank Grillo's Rick Flag Sr. is my favorite Creature Commandos character, playing a similar role to his son's on the Suicide Squad as the team's field leader. In second place comes The Bride, whose tragic backstory was fascinating in episode 2.
However, since this is an animated show, the opportunity to go much bigger in these scenes is often taken with exuberance. None of this is to disparage or declare the show is lacking, but merely the fact that it is clearly directed at adults. The level of violence exceeds even the most edgy American adult animated shows, and is far more similar to mature anime content which has a long history of being intended for adults. Do not expect the violence to be toned down because of the animated style. If anything, it is played up to the nth degree.
Creature Commandos Includes Profanity And Mature Themes
Putting The Explicit Cherry On Top Of The TV-MA Creature Commandos Cake
And finally, Creature Commandos also makes a point of including content such as profanity, and other mature themes. From death, crime, drugs, sex, violence, and all of the above, to more niche dark topics, the series is liberal in its exploration of these things. The characters who take the lead in the show are mostly criminals, responsible for large-scale murders, and they are not afraid or in any way averse to throwing around profanity and expletives to make their points. The result is a very overtly apparent animated show that is aimed at adults audiences exclusively.
Creature Commandos can be a fun watch for all those consuming it responsibly.
With a TV-MA rating, there is leeway in deciding who may be mature enough to watch, but that is purely down to the discretion of the adults who are in charge. There is obviously a lot to praise in Creature Commandos, with a compelling narrative, bright funny moments, and well-designed character developments throughout the seven-episode run of season 1, but it should also be made perfectly clear that it is first and foremost a show that is for audiences old enough to appreciate, understand, and engage with the content on show. Otherwise, Creature Commandos can be a fun watch for all those consuming it responsibly.
