Warning! This post contains SPOILERS for Creature Commandos episode 7
DCU Easter eggs and references, including some key locations from the original comics. Bringing the first season of the animated DCU show to a close, there are several nods and connections both to past DC projects while also teasing an exciting future. This includes a collection of new and old faces that get teased in the episode's final scenes.
Featuring Task Force M reassembled in Pokolistan following the events of Creature Commandos episode 6, the team attempts to kill Princess Rostovic, all while the truth about Circe's dark vision for the future is finally revealed. Featuring some major deaths and some exciting connections to the greater DCU, the Creature Commandos finale is full of surprises as it brings this first season to a close. To that end, here are the biggest and best Easter eggs and references we were able to find in Creature Commandos episode 7.
11 "Can It, Ghost Rider"
A Classic Marvel Hero
The Bride calls Doctor Phosphorus "Ghost Rider" in Creature Commandos episode 7. Having an obvious resemblance to the motorcycle-riding burning skeletal Marvel hero, the nickname is pretty spot-on. Likewise, it's also a notable dig considering the Marvel reference in a DCU project. While rare, it has happened occasionally, and be found throughout the CW's Arrowverse. A live-action version of Ghost Rider has yet to debut in the MCU proper, apart from Robbie Reyes and his muscle car in Marvel's Agents of SHIELD. However, the former ABC show and its canon currently remains separate from the main Earth-616 timeline.
10 Nina’s Father
Connecting To Original Creature Commandos Comics
Nina's DCU origins have their differences from the comics while still having connections, such as her father still being a scientist. In the original comics, Myron Mazursky adopted Nina who was already an amphibian girl he discovered while studying monsters during WWII. However, he told her she was his actual daughter whom he transformed to cure a lung disease she had at birth. Likewise, Myron was also the founder of the original Creature Commandos.
Now, Nina Mazursky is revealed to truly be Myron's actual biological child in the DCU show who was genuinely born with a lung disease. This resulted in Myron trying to cure his daughter using the DNA of aquatic animals, giving her finds and gills that resulted in her being without pain, but only being able to breathe underwater. As such, it's interesting to see James Gunn having flipped the script with Nina's origins by making Myron's fiction a reality, though it seems Myron has no other connections to Task Force M beyond being Nina's father.
9 Major Comics Locations Referenced In The DCU
Star City, Blüdhaven, and Metropolis
Nina lived in Star City as a child, home to the hero Green Arrow. Likewise, Star City News confirms the existence of Nightwing's city of Blüdhaven and also references Superman's city of Metropolis. In Creature Commandos episode 7, Star City News confirms that specialists from both cities are being brought in to find and capture Nina once she's discovered living in the sewers and rivers and her existence is documented and released to the public.
While DCU fans have received their first glimpses of Metropolis in the trailer for 2025's Superman, it's exciting to learn that Star City and Blüdhaven exist, especially what that could mean for future hero debuts. After all, Green Arrow was referenced in Peacemaker season 1. Likewise, Damian Wayne's Robin being featured in the Brave and the Bold movie suggests Nightwing may already be an active hero in the DCU.
8 Weasel Can’t Swim
Confirmed In 2021's The Suicide Squad
It's mentioned that Weasel can't swim in Creature Commandos episode 7, and she's shown drowning when he tries to save Princess Illana as she'd been nice to him in earlier episodes. Weasel's inability to swim was hilariously proven in 2021's The Suicide Squad when he nearly died almost immediately via drowning as no one on Waller's team had checked to see if he could swim or not. That said, it was The Suicide Squad's post-credits scenes that confirmed Weasel survived his drowning ahead of his animated Creature Commandos debut.
7 Mary Shelley's Mathilda
Author of Frankenstein
The Bride is shown looking at Princess Rostovic's collection of books before she kills Ilana at the end of Creature Commandos episode 7. She notably stops on Mathilda written by author Mary Shelley. Shelley wrote Mathilda following the publication of Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus in 1818.
6 "A Sadistic Disney Princess"
Princess Ilana Flips The Script
The Bride refers to Illana as "a power-mad, sadistic, narcissistic, Disney princess who wants to destroy the world". The Disney princess call-out is rather fitting, seeing how Illana was framed exactly like a stereotypical innocent and kind Disney Princess throughout the entire series. She was even shown befriending animals like the Weasel.
5 Nosferata s Task Force M
A Classic DC Vampire
Originally believed to be Francine Langstrom's She-Bat, James Gunn has confirmed that Task Force M's new vampiric recruit is actually Nosferata. Shown previously in Creature Commandos episode 4, Nosferata is a vampire who first debuted in the comics with 1998's Superboy #50. On the page, Nosferta possesses all the typical vampire qualities and powers such as flight, immortality, the ability to transform into animals such as bats, psychokinesis, hypnosis, enhanced senses, and more. As such, it should be very exciting to see how Task Force M handles a vampire on the new roster going forward.
4 Aten or Khalis II
Mummies With Creature Commandos Connections
A mummy is shown knitting in the background of Task Force M's new wing. This is likely either Aten or Khalis II, both DC mummies with Creature Commandos history on the page. Aten served as a communications officer whose bandages had healing properties. The same was true for Khalis, who had a greater variety of supernatural powers and also served as the team's official medic. As such, it will be interesting to learn in the future which mummy has ed the DCU's Task Force M.
James Gunn has since confirmed that the mummy shown at the end of Creature Commandos episode 7 is indeed Khalis.
3 An Upgraded G.I. Robot
Rebuilt For Creature Commandos Season 2
It's revealed that Amanda Waller had G.I. Robot rebuilt following Creature Commandos episode 3, albeit with a much larger new body. As a result, it stands to reason that G.I. Robot likely has a new and more modern arsenal at his disposal, while also being much stronger compared to his original body that was destroyed by the Amazonian sorceress Circe. G.I. Robot was a standout fan-favorite character in Creature Commandos, so it's nice to see that he'll be making a return in Creature Commandos season 2 which has already been confirmed by James Gunn and DC Studios.
2 King Shark Returns
A Perfect Fit For Task Force M
Having first debuted in 2021's The Suicide Squad, Nanaue aka King Shark is an incredibly fitting new addition to Task Force M. One of the few survivors of Task Force X in the live-action DC movie directed by James Gunn, it seems as though King Shark is still working for Waller, and it seems as though he'll be right at home with the rest of Task Force M's monster. While King Shark was voiced by Sylvester Stallone in live-action, this new animated appearance has Nanaue voiced by Diedrich Bader.
Thanks to this new King Shark appearance and past references made to The Suicide Squad in Creature Commandos, one has to wonder where the other Task Force X survivors might be. Perhaps Bloodsport, Harley Quinn, and Ratcatcher II are also still working for Waller on other missions, just like Peacemaker in his spin-off series. It would certainly be fun to see them again in the future of James Gunn's DCU.
