The wait for book 6 of worried about the ACOTAR series' future.

While the wait has allowed for some fascinating theories on A Court Of Thorns & Roses 6's story, it has created a sense of frustration among the fan base, as it's been years since Maas published Nesta's arc. Despite the fact that A Court Of Silver Flames allowed for some closure on certain characters, much has yet to be explored in Maas' universe that audiences like myself were hoping to see. That radio silence, then, has created a sense of disappointment around the series even as audiences continue to praise it and wait for the next installment.

Audiences have grown embittered as the wait for A Court Of Thorns & Roses book 6 continues, especially as the latest book was released four years ago and left some details unexplored. As mentioned, A Court Of Silver Flames ended with a strong resolution for Nesta's own personal journey alongside of a few other characters. However, the last book in Maas' series did not really dive into characters like Elain or the new conflict with Koshei, making the silence on book 6's plot all the more disappointing for audiences who wanted more from those storylines.

A Court Of Silver Flames was published on February 16, 2021.

Misinformation on the next book has not helped matters, as rumors filter into the fan base and create further frustration once disproven by Maas or other credible sources. The A Court Of Shaded Truths rumor is a prime example of this, as it both spread misinformation on the book's premise and highlighted just how little we know about A Court Of Thorns & Roses' future. That being said, this wait may not necessarily be all bad, as it comes with an important possibility few within the fan base are considering.

The Gap Between A Court Of Thorns & Roses Books Comes With One Key Silver Lining

Maas Could Be Taking Her Time To Perfect The Series

The prolonged wait for the next book in the A Court Of Thorns & Roses series could mean that Maas is creating a novel that improves on the previous installments, allowing the next book to truly shine. While the series is strongly beloved by audiences, and for good reason, there are aspects of Maas' world-building and characterizations that could be more fleshed out. This hiatus could mean that Maas is taking advantage of the opportunities within A Court Of Thorns & Roses that she previously overlooked, taking her time to really strengthen the overall story.

The next Court of Thorns & Roses book should tell Elain Archeron’s story, and the two best installments in the series prove how well it would work.

Maas could be doing the same for the remaining characters' arcs, especially as book 6 of A Court Of Thorns & Roses will likely be Elain's story. Elain's arc is already set to be a complex one between her seer abilities and her feelings towards both Azriel and Lucien. By taking her time, Maas could be focusing more heavily on the story's needs to create the best book possible. That consideration is also allowing A Court Of Thorns & Roses to run parallel to more recent series, which in some cases have the opposite problem.

ACOTAR's Book 6 Wait Means It Isn't Falling Into One Troublesome Publishing Trend

The continued wait for A Court Of Thorns & Roses book 6 is still discouraging, but this wait time is at least letting the series avoid a recent sequel publishing trend that has hurt other authors. Many of the romantasy books coming out in 2025 have been or will be sequels or next installments to more recent series, A Curse Carved In Bone and The Ballad Of Falling Dragons being key examples of this rapid release pattern in publishing. Though that has helped keep attention on those series, it can also have negative consequences.

Maas' silence on book 6 of A Court Of Thorns & Roses at least suggests that she's, hopefully, not feeling that same stress.

Fourth Wing author Rebecca Yarros has famously discussed how rushed she felt to get Onyx Storm out to the public; her declaration that she will not begin book 4 of The Empyrean Series for a while is a direct result of that pressure. In a similar vein, several books have suffered narratively due to this trend, oftentimes cutting off intriguing arcs for the sake of meeting that demand. Despite the frustration, Maas' silence on book 6 of A Court Of Thorns & Roses at least suggests that she's, hopefully, not feeling that same stress.
