The Conjuring 2.

The Crooked Man is tied to a zoetrope toy owned by the Hodgson family that Ed and Lorraine Warren help to overcome the demon Valak in the movie The Conjuring 2, although the character itself is inspired by an old British nursery rhyme. Played by noted monster actor Javier Botet, The Crooked Man seemed like an obvious choice for a spinoff, perhaps some type of origin story like Annabelle got. Yet, at this juncture, it's been quite a while since the last chatter surrounding the project took place.

This long delay has left it uncertain whether The Crooked Man movie will ever actually happen. The answer seems to be yes, with the caveat that the players involved feel no need to rush the development process. Here's all the information currently available about the Crooked Man spinoff's delay.

From almost the moment The Conjuring 2 was released, there were murmurings about a Crooked Man spinoff set in the extended Conjuring movie universe. The character had made a terrific impression, and fans seemingly wanted more. By spring 2017, Conjuring franchise producer Peter Safran was musing publicly about a spinoff, and just a few months later, the project was confirmed as entering development. However, an entire year went by, and things about The Crooked Man went deathly quiet. In September 2018, Safran revealed that the script wasn't yet finished, and that things wouldn't progress past that stage until they considered the story ready.

In spring 2019, not long before the release of The Nun's horror movie debut, leading them to fast-track a spinoff about her instead. Considering how much money The Nun made, they seem to have made the right move. Safran cautioned that The Crooked Man wasn't a dead project and that they're still interested in making it. The catch is, they don't know when it'll work out for them to do so, as the Conjuring universe continues unabated. Considering it's been a few years since Safran made those comments, perhaps audiences shouldn't hold their breath for The Crooked Man to arrive.

Despite the long delay on The Conjuring's spinoff project, there is a movie in circulation called The Crooked Man which could cause some confusion. This film, which is from 2016, seems to have been made specifically to piggyback on The Conjuring 2's success and the impact of the titular character, but it's not an official Conjuring movie and doesn't feature the same iteration of The Crooked Man. Instead, it's a fairly standard B-level horror film with a monster who looks more like a watered-down Freddy Krueger than the eerie figure from The Conjuring 2. Fortunately, this isn't the official The Crooked Man movie that's been promised.
